Recently, Tesla released its superchargers for other brands’ cars on the German market. As it happens, the fast charging stations of the American manufacturer do not comply with the local regulations, which specify the calibration requirements and indicate the information that needs to be provided.
Tesla has been starting to make its network of fast charging stations available for third-party electric vehicles for some time. Currently, the American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer has about 35,000. EV charging stations, which makes it the owner and operator of the largest fast charging network in the world.
The process of developing advanced chargers began in the Netherlands, where Tesla enabled the charging of other cars at 10 stations. This year, the program has been expanded to other countries, including Norway, France, England, Spain, Sweden, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Finland , Luxembourg, Switzerland and Germany.
Incompatibility with German law
In Germany, however, there was a problem with the provision of charging stations by Tesla. It concerns the lack of a display on Tesla’s charging stations informing about the number of kWh used and the charging price.
Until now, Tesla car users could monitor the charging process of an electrician – including the number of kWh downloaded – on their smartphone screen via a mobile app. Superchargers do not have any additional screens that can inform the user about the status of the charging process.
At the same time, according to German legislation on enabling electric vehicles – namely the Mess- und Eichgesetz (MesseG) and Preisangabenverordnung (PAngV) regulations – EV charging stations must meet official calibration requirements and must provide consumers with clear information about the amount of electricity produced. by car. In addition – the price of the charging period must be displayed and converted into a unit of energy (kWh) supplied to the electrician. This applies not only to public space, but also to corporate and private space.
As reported by the German newspaper “Handelsblatt”, due to the lack of such functions in Tesla superchargers, they are currently considered illegal in Germany.
It’s not just Tesla
Thomas Weberpals, head of the Bavarian Weights and Measures Authority, says Tesla needs to modernize and adapt fast charging stations to German regulations. At the moment, Berlin has no intention of launching any sanctions against the American producer.
As it happens, apart from Tesla’s superchargers, charging stations from other manufacturers do not comply with the provisions of German law, but because Tesla currently has the largest network of charging stations, it was the points that have become bigger.
Cars from manufacturers other than Tesla that can be charged using US main chargers (compatible with the CCS connector) include the BMW i3, Kia e-Niro and Jaguar I-Pace.
