Now for the grant: Polestar 2 or Tesla Model 3, which is the better choice?

You are in the market for a premium EV and would like to take advantage of the SEPP subsidy. The Tesla Model 3 was already an option, but the Polestar 2 has recently been added. Which of these two electric cars should you have?

This week it was revealed that Polestar was the one Polestar 2 prices are revised downwards. Because the entry level – Polestar 2 Standard range Single Motor – became cheaper by 6,250 euros, the price dropped from 51,200 euros to 44,950. Not coincidentally, the EV fell below the subsidy level, which means that another 2,950 euros is deducted from the price. So there is still 42,000 euros left to finish.

Together with Tesla model 3 you have been able to benefit from the EV subsidy for some time now. Of course, this wasn’t always the case, but thanks to several price cuts implemented last year, the popular electric sedan has been eligible for government support for nearly a year. You are currently paying 43,990 euros for the upgraded Tesla Model 3 ‘Highland’. If you subtract the subsidy of 2,950 euros, the final amount is 41,040 euros.

Price and performance

In terms of price and performance, Polestar 2 and Tesla Model 3 are not much different. Tesla is about a thousand euros cheaper, it has faster charging, a bigger trunk and less speed. Polestar offers a large battery, range and towing capacity. Additionally, the two EVs differ slightly in terms of rear legroom, although the center tunnel in the Polestar 2 ensures that it is in fact a four-seater.

Choice options

A subsidy limit of 45,000 is applicable based on the tariff price. By deducting the costs of roadworthiness, this is often between a thousand and a half euros less than the actual price. The preparation cost at Polestar is 1300 euros, at Tesla it is 1000 euros. This brings the financial price of the Polestar 2 to 43,650 euros and that of the Tesla Model 3 to 42,990 euros.

This gives room for options. With the Polestar 2, this means you can order the car in a color other than the standard ‘Magnesium’, but other options such as 20-inch rims are not available. The price of the Tesla Model 3 offers more room for extras. For example, you can choose the color blue, red, black or gray. But larger 19-inch wheels or a white interior are also possible. However, you can’t mix it up, you have to choose one option.

Standard equipment

What about standard equipment? With the entry-level Polestar 2 you get 19-inch wheels, heated front seats, 2-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.2-inch multimedia touchscreen as standard. The Model 3 has no instruments and the wheels are smaller, but the EV has a larger 15.4-inch touchscreen. The Tesla also comes with a panoramic roof, faux leather upholstery and 3-zone climate control as standard.

Conclusion

There is little difference between the Polestar 2 and the Tesla Model 3. In terms of price, specifications and equipment, the 2 EVs are very close to each other, so it’s about the details. Choose the Model 3 for a slightly lower price, more power, a larger trunk and better fast charging capabilities. Polestar 2 comes into the picture when you attach more value to higher towing weight, greater range and better ergonomics thanks to digital instruments.
