BMW in Regensburg wants to be greener

In its current environmental statement, the BMW plant in Regensburg documents its efforts towards the “highest environmental and social standards,” as plant manager Armin Ebner says.

“As one of the largest employers in the Upper Palatinate, social responsibility in this region is also part of it for us,” says Ebner. For example, the BMW plant in Regensburg replaced one of the two primary lines at the beginning of the year. The second will follow in August 2025. The process saves 17 million liters of water and around 17,400 megawatt hours of energy in Regensburg and Dingolfing every year. “By changing the painting process, we are moving one step closer to the BMW Group’s goal of reducing CO2 emissions across the entire value chain by 40 percent by 2030,” emphasizes Ebner.

Repairing recovery systems reduces water consumption

In addition, the repair of the electrical cooling systems, which took place in 2023, will reduce the plant’s water consumption by one third. The factory-proven bus network with 36 bus routes, which is used by more than 3,000 employees, saves almost 3,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

In addition, more than 50 percent of the BMW X1 and BMW X2 produced at the BMW Group plant in Regensburg are transported by rail. This also saves resources. There are also five beehives on the factory premises with around 45,000 bees and 100 nesting boxes for birds and bats.
