Subaru Solterra 2024: the company got the message

Subaru could have saved a lot of money by partnering with Toyota developing and launching its first 100% electric car, the single, but the latter is not very competitive and has a different temper. Low Canadian sales in 2023 bear this out, representing about a third of models like the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Among other things, what do we criticize about Solterra? Recharges very slowly and the cockpit is far from unanimous, to mention only two examples. Good news: Subaru got the message.

By 2024, Solter’s fast charging capabilities (direct current) will improve. Now it is possible to go from 10% to 80% in 35 minutes instead of almost an hour. Additionally, an efficient high-voltage battery preload system allows for faster recharging in sub-freezing temperatures. Subaru is talking about savings of up to 80 minutes in certain conditions. Therefore, even if the range is only 360 km (official), we will be able to spend less time at the stations.

Additionally, the digital multi-function display now provides information such as battery charge percentage and estimated time to charge to 80% or 100%. It will also be easier to look at, because Solterra changes the steering wheel to a more flat shape (definitely not the same as the rectangular steering wheel found in Japan) which should no longer hide information for most drivers. We can’t wait to try it.

Speaking of the steering wheel, Subaru added paddles – one with “+” and the other with “-” – allowing you to easily adjust the level of regenerative braking.

What else? Well, roof rails that allow for the installation of ramps and racks are now included as standard on all trims. Then, in terms of safety, the EyeSight system gets features that are not available in other Subaru vehicles, such as the possibility of driving without touching up to a speed of 40 km/h, even in traffic. Solterra can also change lanes by activating turn signals and providing traffic alerts ahead. There is also an added driver attention monitoring system.

Pricing and equipment details for the Canadian market will be announced soon and we’ll be sure to keep you posted here. What’s encouraging is that the 2024 Subaru Solterra is offered at the same base price as last year on the US side, so let’s hope it’s the same north of the border.
