The new blade battery from BYD should enable a range of 1,000 km

(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – BYD is one of the world’s leading battery manufacturers (second only to CATL). This is mainly due to blade batteries and the fact that they are efficient, modern, powerful and inexpensive and are used by many car manufacturers. BYD is now ready to introduce the next generation of batteries. It will enable a larger array with even less cost.

At least that’s what FinDreams, a Chinese company involved in the development and production of batteries, says. It was FinDreams that launched the first Blade battery in 2020. Four years ago, BYD made a real revolution in the market with this battery. How much? Well … it is used by Toyota, Stellantis, Hyundai-Kia, Ford and even Tesla.

The Blade battery is a breakthrough due to its design with very long, sword-shaped cells (hence the name “Blade”). They occupy the entire width of the battery pack and offer simple construction and high energy density due to the fact that they save space. Additionally, Blade batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, which are inherently cheaper than traditional lithium-ion cells.

BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu recently announced the second generation. It will be launched in August and, thanks to a series of design improvements and new chemistry, it will have a 26.6 percent higher energy density: from the current 150 Wh/kg to 190 Wh/kg.

So they will also be offered in smaller and lighter versions to ensure the same range. On the contrary, in standard versions they will reach a distance of 1,000 km: a real record for the LFP package.
