The Citroën C4 Cactus was the first Citroen model to directly reference the comfort and original looks of its predecessors. Its unique and attractive interior impressed customers and industry experts. Then the brand became conservative again, losing customers.

Citroën has always impressed customers by being different. Thus, the debut of the Citroën C4 Cactus aroused great interest and caused a stir among fans of the brand, and orders poured in one after another. It was a great commercial success, because Citroën was able to create a car that looked attractive and, above all, stood out from many unusual boxes.

The appreciation of the experts was reflected in the awards: in March 2015, the Citroën C4 Cactus took second place in the prestigious European Car of the Year competition. The car scored as many as 248 points in the poll. A month later, at the New York Auto Show, it was announced that the Citroën C4 Cactus had won the World Car Design of the Year title.

What contributed to this success? Different appearance – to this day C4 Cactus attracts attention on the street – comfortable interior with its original design, minimalist design and pleasant accents – for example the memory of the appearance of travel jackets (handles on the doors!) and in the version with the machine the automatic had well-designed front seats, like a couch. Simple, preconceived notions that accountants couldn’t get wrong.

Unfortunately, the project was later destroyed by a facelift and this model ended. Why did this happen? The reason was very small – the accountants did not want to agree to invest in Airbump technology – which made the C4 Cactus stand out but required more work to maintain the paper.

And the C4 Cactus had a lot of potential to develop this design – just look at the title photo. It may not be an SUV, but it’s almost a true crossover, right? Of course, not everyone likes such additions, but such a small modification shows how much space designers would have if they continued to move towards Airbump and this type of body. Color, stand out on the street, reduce repair costs, avoid minor accidents – only benefits. Only these costs… on the part of the accountants.
