Wednesday kicked off the 2023 LCK Spring Split with the first two games of the regular season. After a tough match, Faker and T1 went on to win 2-0 against Gen.G, the defending champion of the Korean league. After the match, head coach Bengi and midfielder Faker went to the press room to answer questions from the media.
How do you feel after today’s victory?
Many : It was our first match this season, and I’m happy that we started with 2-0 goals against Gen.G. They say a good start is half a job well done, so I feel like we’re halfway through a successful season.
Faker : Since it was the first match, it was very important for speed. I think it is very important that we won 2-0.
In the second game, you benefited from the fights, and it seems that Lissandra played a big role in those situations. How would you rate Lisandra?
Faker : When the conditions are set, all our players are doing well, so it went well in Game 2. Since there were many things we could do, we also had good games.
Why did you make Ionian boots in the first game?
Faker : I had to overcome a bad start to the game, and I needed to make up for lost time.
During the media day, the teams chose Dplus KIA and T1 as favourites. What did you think watching Dplus KIA play before your match?
Faker : Dplus KIA did well in its debut. Since today we beat Gen.G, if we also beat Dplus KIA we will get good results.
You kept the same team as last year. What is the T1 trend heading into the Spring Split? What do you think needs to be improved?
Many : At Worlds, we were a team that was good in teamfights and overall, especially teamfights. I think we will have the same style as last year because the meta hasn’t changed much. What we need to improve is meta understanding, as there have been changes in patches. Even in the next patch, there will be big changes, so it is important to understand that.
Faker : The biggest strength of our players is that we have good individual performance. In order for us to continue to show good performance, it is important to constantly improve with heart and passion. To do that, we have to work hard individually while coming together as a team.
You always said your goal was to be better than before. What do you think you have improved the most compared to last year?
Faker : After losing so many finals, I thought a lot about what could have been done better for us to win. I thought I should prepare the things that we missed when we had time. This year, my goal is to learn and put into practice what I learned.
During media day, you were the only player to pick Gen.G as a favorite. Did their performance meet your expectations?
Faker : When it comes to laning or macro, Gen.G is as strong as last year. However, I got the impression that their joint work is not planned yet. We won 2-0 today, but they are still a strong team that can do well.
Rules have been changed for MSI. Two major league teams will be out. What do you think about this change? What are the pros and cons of participating in MSI?
Many : Since there are two teams from each major league, all competitions have been as tough as the worlds. Giving space to multiple teams is a positive change. The benefits of participating in MSI is that you can maintain the structure of the Summer Split through MSI to the Summer Split. On the other hand, the schedule is very difficult. There will be many teams that will be tired of this schedule.
Faker : Having two teams going to MSI is very positive because more teams can get international experience and fans can watch more different games. As a professional player, the more tournaments there are, the more likely you are to get meaningful results. Experience of playing against foreign teams and analyzing them is a big advantage. The downside of going to MSI is that there isn’t enough rest compared to other teams. This may be different for each player, but it can be negative.
So far, T1 has not been able to attend the world championships held in Korea. What are your plans for this year?
Many : I never thought of planning for a whole year, but T1’s goal is always to be the best team. Every year our goal is to win the world championship. We missed the whole World in Korea, but there were only two. This year, we will have satisfactory results.
(To Bengi) You have seen Faker since his beginning. What do you think about it?
Many : Faker has been around for ten years now. It’s been there since my first game and it’s still there, playing at a high level. He is always eager to improve, and I think he is a great role model for other talented players.
