Hyundai Ioniq 5 Facelift: The battery gets a little bigger

E-GMP – Electric Global Modular Platform: Under this name, the Hyundai Group has brought a series of electric vehicles to the market in three brands that have at least one thing in common: they can charge very quickly. Hyundai Ioniq 5 was one of the first on this basis. It is now being slightly modified.

Hyundai has not fundamentally changed the unusual design of the Ioniq 5. The renewal of the front and rear panels makes the car 20 mm longer, without any practical benefit for the customer. In practice, the Ioniq 5 is still 4.66 m long and is bigger than it looks in the picture. It has the same design as the Skoda Enyaq. To improve aerodynamics, the rims were redesigned and the roof edge spoiler was extended.

There are a few subtle improvements in the interior, such as an easy-to-reach charging cradle for smartphones. The LEDs in the steering wheel are also new.

Hyundai also announces minor improvements in the interior. Above all, they are intended to simplify operation. What most consumers will notice is the relocation of the wireless cell phone charging cradle, which is now given a central location between the seats. Hyundai has improved the noise insulation around the rear electric motor. The new “N Line” equipment line is intended to appeal to customers who would like to see an SUV designed to go faster. You get a package with modified bumpers and sill panels, 20-inch rims and sports seats.

One of the attractions in the past was the high charging performance, which so far has not had much competition in this segment. After Hyundai reset the air conditioning system before the battery last year, fast charging can also be done in winter as long as a certain distance is driven before charging. With the modification, the charging performance does not increase further, but Hyundai increases the energy content a little more. Instead of 77.4 it will be 84 kWh in the future. In WLTP, the range should increase by around 40 km. Hyundai has not yet released any information about this.

Hyundai does not provide any information about the changed prices. The basic model with a 58 kWh battery was previously available from 43,900 euros. Since Hyundai has yet to respond to the loss of sponsorship in this country, at least when it comes to listing prices, this could be done as part of a model update. The facelifted Ioniq 5 is now available in South Korea, with Europe expected to follow later this year. It will probably happen in the summer.
