Eastern Idaho GMC Dealer Athlete of the Week – Giulia Johns | Information

It is an accomplishment for any freshman to earn a spot on the varsity sports team.

Giulia Johns has not only found her place among her Thunder Ridge softball peers, but she has also made a big impact in what is turning out to be a very special season.

The Titans have had their backs against the wall a few times this season, having to dig down to get big wins, and no comeback was more impressive than the Titans’ 6 down 7th against Rigby.

Giulia had a walk-off hit to seal the Titans’ big comeback.

“I definitely couldn’t have done it without my team,” says Giulia. “That was an amazing comeback for everyone. It felt really good to get the win, especially as a freshman.”

Assistant coach Billy Butler, who knows a thing or two about big hits in playing minutes, says it’s not lost on the coaching staff how professionally Johns carried himself as a freshman.

“If he does it at the level of output, winning a game this week and just the numbers he’s putting up, offensively and defensively, a very athletic kid can play anywhere on the field,” says Coach Butler. “(We) couldn’t be happier for him. He’s put in a lot of work and, you know, he’s a big difference maker for our team.”

Giulia says that although she was terrified when she first joined the varsity team as a freshman, her teammates couldn’t have been more welcoming.

“They’re really nice, especially the older ones,” Johns says. “There’s usually a stereotype of the seniors beating the freshmen, but not this year, in softball or volleyball.”

Giulia is also an avid volleyball player when she is not on the softball field.

The two-sport athlete says he would like to play a sport at the next level after high school, but for now he is enjoying his time at Thunder Ridge with his teammates.
