The new Bugatti reaffirms the essence of craftsmanship

C’it is more than a change of direction, it is a change of era. The relaunch of the brand initiated under the watch of Ferdinand Piëch, at a time when nothing is impossible for the Volkswagen group, will be followed by a more secret era of Rimac. But not for long. Largely unknown to the public, this Croatian manufacturer has distinguished itself in the successful electrification of cars, to the extent that Porsche itself is a shareholder of the manufacturer.

This one is named after Mate Rimac, a visionary entrepreneur who attracted many top level engineers. It’s fitting that the design office he created for his own cars is also cleverly promoting hybrids and electrics on behalf of major brands. They do not brag about it, but they present themselves as if this phenomenon is theirs.

Rumors have been swirling for days about what the next generation of Bugattis from the Volkswagen era will be. If the car has not yet been revealed, its silhouette just visible under the canvas was revealed by Mate Rimac on his Instagram accountsuch as its unique engine architecture.

No penalty but 1,800 horse power

This was largely developed by the English specialists from Cosworth, famous for their 176 victories with Ford in Formula 1, when it was aeronautical. This is according to our colleagues inCar Motor and Sports, this principle that the engineers kept, reconnecting with the masters in the pure form of racing mechanics. Twelve is not enough although they created a similar engine for the Aston Martin Valkyrie, it is actually sixteen cylinders, this time it is arranged in a V and without the four turbos of Bugatti until today, which will increase the displacement to 8.3 liters.

But where the W16 was limited to 7,000 rpm, the new V16 revs up to 9,000 rpm to deliver over 1,000 horsepower. In the great tradition of Formula 1. But Rimac has not forgotten the strict standards and its hybrid expertise has made it connect two electric motors in the front and a third in the box to reach 1,800 horse power.

They will be available only occasionally, during which the 24.8 kWh battery will be able to start. More strategically to reach the city center, the German newspaper suggests an electric range of 60 km. In this way, the car could avoid the ecological penalty. It is surprising for a car capable of accelerating from 0 to… 400 km/h in 25 seconds “on paper” which we will have to dare to prove.

On earlier versions of Bugattis, this was possible, but it required a special key to unlock the extremely high-speed setup that very few places in the world allow to maintain for more than a few tens of seconds. But knowing that it can do so is the satisfaction of many amateurs. The reveal of the full car is announced for the month of June.
