The novelty itself is debatable, but we do not want to condemn it, the Z3 M Coupé also caused a stir at the time. For us, this is a remarkable achievement, compared to which the new Touring Coupé is relatively simple.

Last weekend, the new edition of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este took place on Lake Como, Italy. Like previous editions, this year’s was sponsored by BMW which, as always, presented unprecedented innovations. The car, called the Touring Coupé, made a lot of noise and was impressive. This is why the manufacturer is considering a production version, although it is limited. As with the previous 3.0 CSL, there are talks of 50 units, each of which would sell for between 5 and 15 million crowns.

The coupe mentioned above was more expensive to buy, but the high interest of the public in this case is understandable. The Limited looked impressive, aided by 560 horsepower delivered to the rear axle through a six-speed manual gearbox. Without supercharging, therefore, we would have a car prepared according to the classic Bavarian recipe. This is why even American collectors did not hesitate to buy it, even though the 3.0 CSL is not homologated for North America.

It is clear that with 50 units BMW will find a buyer more easily for the next novel. This will also have a three-liter six-cylinder engine, but its power has not been revealed. We can assume, however, that instead of comparing the coupe mentioned above, it will be closer to the Z4 roadster by default. In the case of the M40i variant, the engine produces 388 horsepower, but although the car is more powerful, a look inside reveals that the Touring coupe uses an automatic gearbox to transmit it.

Technically, the new specialization is therefore not as attractive as the previous one. But that wouldn’t be so surprising if it weren’t for his suspicious appearance. Indeed, the Touring Coupé is probably not considered attractive even by its creators, among other things because of the donor car. Indeed, the default Z4 offers a wheelbase of 2,470 mm, which is extended to 4,324 mm, the passenger compartment being almost exactly in the middle. That doesn’t sound very “Bavarian”.

However, the idea is clearly stretched in length, which is clearly visible with a pronounced front overhang. If, visually, this made it possible to lengthen the bonnet and activate the standard design, the full passenger compartment includes a very strong contradiction. The builder may have jumped into the same river a second time, but this time it was a little slippery. This was evident at the event itself, where the original BMW Z3 M Coupé, introduced in 1998, was shown alongside the concept.

Also in this case we have a long front bonnet or rear facing passenger compartment. But everything seems to be more balanced. It is worth remembering, however, that at the time of its arrival, the car also caused great controversy. People preferred the roadster, of which 15,322 units were sold in the M version. On the other hand, less than half of the coupe was produced and even today it is one of the few production models of the brand. And because it has aged like wine, technically and design-wise, it is now equated with gold.

Will it be the same for the Touring Coupé? Value growth is assured, given the expected low production, but we are not entirely convinced about timelessness. And even if the novel is a toy for a few very rich people, the Z3 version in M ​​​​Coupe was still a popular foreign relative.
