It represents fun and freedom, performance and also a bit of rebellion: fans around the world are celebrating the 60th birthday of the Ford Mustang. The famous sports car appeared before the audience for the first time on April 17, 1964 at the World’s Fair in New York. Sales began on the same day and broke records with 418,000 orders in the first year. To this day, the pony car is in great demand. It has currently led the global sports car registration statistics (1) for over ten years. To celebrate this year’s anniversary, Ford is announcing two new models for the European market. Mustang California Special revisits the story special edition idea first presented in 1968 and reinterprets it in a modern way. The Mustang with the new GT styling package further emphasizes the classic muscle car character with stylish design accents.
There’s also more good news for Mustang fans: Just in time for the sports car legend’s birthday, Ford has confirmed today that a high-performance GTD* variant will also be coming to Europe. It is the road legal implementation of the GT3 racing car, freed from the constraints of the regulations, that the Blue Oval returns to this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. Starting April 30, Ford will also open the order books for the new Mustang Mach-E Rally*. Many of the details of this 358 kW (487 hp) variant of the electric SUV model from the Mustang family were based on a long rally tradition.
Today’s “Mustang Day” also announces a special campaign: the so-called Ford Mustang Global Gallop. 60 Mustang ambassadors, journalists and bloggers are participating in this international “Mustang Gallop”. Later this year they will begin traveling with the sports car brand through North and South America, Europe, South Africa, China and Australia to document the continued popularity of the cult model. For example, Andy To (@Andyto ( Lauren Stoney (@lalafox92 () and Uma Leoni (@Leonis.studios ( Ford will announce more participants soon.
“Few car brands today can look back on a history as varied and rich and as large an international fan base as the Ford Mustang – and even fewer have rolled off the assembly line uninterrupted for 60 years,” emphasizes Jon Williams, CEO. Director of Ford Blue Europe. “Our anniversary celebrations and new additions to the series are all about the freedom and joy of driving, qualities that have been at the core of Mustang’s incredible success for six decades now. They continue to inspire new technologies that will continue to push the Mustang into the future.
New Mustang models, same spirit
The new Mustang GT* California Special follows in the footsteps of the version that, with its special design, perfectly suited the American West Coast lifestyle in 1968. Ford offers the new version as a convertible with a 5.0 liter V8 engine and with a 6-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission. It’s available in eight body colors including Iconic Silver and Vapor Blue, but of course it features the front air intake in Rave Blue and black surrounds for the main headlights – giving the sports car an unmistakable look from the perspective of first. There are also side stripes made up of Medium Light Rave Blue as well as high gloss and matt black. They have special “GT/CS” text. It remains almost invisible in low light, but is more visible in bright sunlight. The 19-inch alloy wheels have polished faces and details in Rave Blue. Custom “GT/CS” logos for the radiator grille and color-matched “GT” logos for the door trims complete the look.
The interior of the Mustang California Special is also very pleasant. Ebony Black leather seats receive Navy Pier upholstery. Two-tone decorative stitching in Raptor Blue and Metal Gray echoes the unique theme of the body design. They decorate the dashboard, door panels, steering wheel and center console.
Like the Mustang GT California Special, the new GT styling package is now available to order with the 5.0-liter engine and two transmission variants as a convertible and a convertible. The new styling package features a dark look – from the light alloy wheels painted in Ebony Black to the black roof and mirror caps in the same color as the exterior to the black pony logos on the front and rear. The appearance of the Mustang sends a clear message: This model wants to do more than just play …
Mustang Mach-E Rally: Strong on asphalt and gravel alike
With the new Mustang Mach-E Racer, Ford is breaking new ground: It is the first series model from the Mustang family that also feels good on gravel and sand tracks as a reference to the decades-old tradition of the rally brand. Its electric motor with a capacity of 358 kW (487 hp) has a torque of more than 950 Newton meters, which flows to the four driven wheels. The specially tuned chassis provides 20 millimeters more ground clearance than the Mach-E GT. In addition to the decorative twin stripes and the independently designed front end, the generously-sized rear spoiler and 19-inch white wheels attract the special talents of this version.
Super sports car Mustang GTD: The most powerful production version of the “horse car”
The latest Mustang GTD will be the fastest street-legal derivative of the most popular sports car family of all time. The high-performance version is based on Ford’s new GT3 racing car. June 16 this year will also start the 24 hours of Le Mans. Many of the technologies in the Mustang GTD go far beyond the capabilities of a racing car – such as an active chassis system and hydraulically adjustable aerodynamic components in the front and rear areas.
