The Porsche roof tent turns sports cars into campers with OEM quality

( – Some things in life go hand in hand. Vans and campers for example. What doesn’t quite go hand-in-hand is camping and, um… sports cars. At least until now. Up until now, you have seen flat planes on racetracks, car rallies or club meetings, but now you can confidently go camping with the Porsche 911 (now buy a used Porsche 911) and Co. Thanks to the new Porsche roof tent.

Porsche Tequipment roof tent

The roof tent was designed and developed by Porsche Tequipment and is also produced there. This is the original equipment and refinement division of the Zuffenhausen sports car manufacturer.

When not in use, the tent turns into a large hard box. It can be fitted to the roof rack systems of the 911, Macan, Cayenne, Panamera and Taycan models. Regardless of whether or not they are equipped with a roof.

Porsche promises a year-round tent for two

When set up, the roof tent should provide a very good view of the outside thanks to two side windows and a skylight. Two side windows can be fully opened for ventilation. An insect screen and blackout should provide night protection against mosquitoes and light.

The tent can accommodate two adults and, according to Porsche, can be used all year round. A mattress made of high-strength polyfoam is attached to the tent. When unfolded, the false surface measures 210 x 130 cm.

The tent walls are made of breathable cotton blend fabric. With waterproof zippers and a separate entry hood, the tent is also designed for rainy days, according to Porsche.

The hard shell case is opened by two gas pressure dampers

The side walls quote the 911’s runway and are printed with Porsche lettering. The interior is distinguished by a light gray lining. The silhouette of the mountain is shown at the end of the head. The quilting pattern is repeated on the mattress.

The roof tent can be quickly set up on site, says the manufacturer. First, the closable safety flaps are opened. Then the hard shell case is slightly lifted and – supported by two gas pressure dampers – opened.

The lower leg section can then be folded and secured using the integrated telescopic ladder. The tent is then revealed. Finally, it should be made and stressed with four spring bars.

Prices start at 4,980 euros

The dimensions (Porsche is of course talking about the technical data) of the roof tent are as follows.

Length x width x height (folded): 146 x 140 x 33 cm
Height x width x height (unfolded): 258 x 257 x 118 cm
Weight: about 56 kg
Maximum payload at standstill³: approx. 190 kg (cars with rails) or approx. 140 kg (cars without rails)
Top speed with roof tent installed: 130 km/h.

The two-person tent can now be ordered from Porsche sales partners for 4,980 euros. Expected to be available from November 2022. Cannot be installed on GT, Cabriolet and Targa models.
