There were rumors that The next generation Mazda 6 switch to rear-wheel drive – and the new SUV has further fueled those rumors – but it looks like the sedan won’t be rear-wheel drive anytime soon. Overall, we’ll have to wait a little longer for the all-new 6 (buy a used Mazda 6 now).

Speaking to Autocar recently, Mazda Europe’s head of development, Joachim Kunz, admitted that a rear-wheel-drive Mazda 6 would be great.

Sales of crossovers and SUVs are the most important for Mazda

But the market has changed a lot in recent years, and selling crossovers and SUVs is more important than a good premium sedan. Kunz ditched Mazda’s rear-wheel drive sedan on principle, contrary to reports two years ago.

“It will be very good … FR [Frontmotor, Heckantrieb]concept with a six-cylinder engine for the successor to the Mazda 6 or a large sports group,” Kunz told the British newspaper. “We would like to have it, but at the moment the most important thing is to sell SUVs. The SUV trend continues, and even more so for Mazda. That’s what sells best.”

You can understand Kunz: In 2021, only 1,643 Mazda 6s were sold in Germany. In general, the production figures for the 6 are decreasing rapidly: while there were still around 139,000 vehicles in the fiscal year 2015, this number decreased to a good 40,000 units between April 2020 and March 2021 (fiscal year 2020).

For all we know, the current generation The Mazda 6 will probably remain on the market for a few more years. Mazda Australia Marketing Director Alastair Doak recently confirmed Drive “There are some updates in the pipeline.” It seems that at this time there is no successor planned or at least not based on the new RWD platform. What’s more likely is that the CX-60 is intended to serve many past 6 customers.

With the Mazda 6 RWD basically ruled out, Autocar reports that one of the rumors has also been announced. RX-9 The sports coupe has not been identified.

It has been speculated that Mazda will develop a two-door version of the new Mazda 6, based on the same RWD platform and powered by a new generation of the straight-six engines that debuted in the CX-60. First of all, however, the CX-60 is presented in the form of CX-80 the other elder brother put aside.
