The Attorney General announces the agreement
As Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Thursday (local time), Audi and Volkswagen have “agreed in principle” to an $85 million fine. Paxton is quoted as saying by Reuters: “If a company thinks it can avoid responsibility for breaking Texas law, it’s putting Texans at risk and pollute our environment, it is absolutely wrong. Volkswagen and Audi found this out the hard way and now they are paying the price.
More penalties are possible
In early May, the Texas Supreme Court ruled that the state’s environmental lawsuit against Volkswagen and Audi can proceed. Volkswagen did not want to comment on the subject when asked by AZ/WAZ. According to Reuters, Volkswagen has so far paid nearly $20 billion in US diesel scandal lawsuits. However, as the courts have decided, Volkswagen is not immune from continuing to be held accountable by local and state authorities.
