The Tesla Model 3 performed the worst in the latest ADAC test. Accordingly, the operation of the vehicle represents a “significant safety hazard.” This is due to the detailed control through the touch screen.

The Tesla Model 3 still has a clear need for improvement when it comes to driving, as the current ADAC test in collaboration with the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences shows. While driving six different compact and mid-size cars, 24 test subjects had to perform safety-related tasks and control the navigation, radio and climate systems, for example. The first ones were heavier.

The Tesla Model 3 scored “adequate” in the test and took last place. The mid-range car did a better job of controlling its infotainment system, but all functions – including those related to safety (such as the headlights) – are operated via the touchscreen only. And that leads to longer service and downtime. According to the car club, there is a serious safety risk. Volume control not tested.

Mazda 3 and BMW 1 in first place

The Mercedes A-Class managed only fifth place. Because their infotainment is “too hard” to use because of the touchpad. VW Golf and Dacia Duster ended up in the middle places. In both the cars, the infotainment system is controlled using a touch screen and the safety related features are controlled using separate controls. ADAC rated the performance of the climate system in the VW Golf as “poor”, which is largely operated via the touch screen.

Mazda 3 and BMW 1 series got the best results for “good” – overall scores of 1.9 and 2.1 respectively. With the controller-based operating system, the auto club saw a disadvantage in controlling the infotainment system because the input took too long. However, the intuitive operation of the safety-related driving functions and the separate climate control unit scored both cars “very good” in this criterion.

Tesla Model 3: Safety-related actions should be regulated separately

“In principle, security-related or frequently used features should be controlled through a separate control element,” according to ADAC. There should be a standardized operation for basic functions.

In addition, the button for the hazard warning lights, for example, should be placed in the center of the dashboard and not on the roof panel as in the Tesla. According to the auto club, the touchscreen is less intrusive than the controller when it comes to operating the infotainment system.
