Tesla managed to enter the top 10 for the first time in history, jumping 32% regionally and 88% globally. Despite this, the first three places in the rankings in the United States are still pickup trucks, for those who use them for work and as a status symbol. In any case, all cars have reached impressive levels from a digital and technological point of view, with various safety improvements, more information on topic here.
Tesla Model Y
Analyst firms report that the Tesla Model Y should have reached sixth place in the US overall list, also beating the Sierra pickup from GMC (a subsidiary of General Motors such as Chevrolet) and other crossovers that have always had good luck, such as . Honda CR-V.
Why did we use terms? Because Tesla does not report regional or individual vehicle sales, only aggregate data and for this reason, the data are only estimates. Overall, Tesla reported that it shipped approximately 1.25 million Model Y and Model 3 vehicles worldwide in 2022. The Model 3 ranked 13th in sales with 211,641 units. The jump is by all accounts, visible and considering that many Americans still prefer alternative solutions connected to heat engines, such as motorcycles, perhaps more suitable for most applications.
Still, it’s no surprise that Tesla is so high. The brand still dominates the electronics market as well as the luxury one. Most of that power comes from the Model Y, which is a well-designed crossover that looks good on the road. Moreover, it is equipped with all the comforts of easy and semi-autonomous driving. In short, Tesla still means electricity and, also thanks to Elon Musk and the legend of the Silicon Valley style, it will be able to establish itself more than any other brand.
The takers
Despite posting its lowest sales since 2012, the Ford F-Series was the best-selling car in the country for the 41st year in a row and was the best-selling “truck” in the United States for the 46th year in a row. The Chevrolet Silverado has returned to its usual position, the second position, which it has held for a long time. In 2021, in fact, it was overtaken by the Ram image, which is part of Stellantis (Fca with PSA).
Others
So we said that the top three cars sold in the United States were up for grabs: the Ford F Series, the Chevrolet Silverado and the Ram. In fourth place we find the RAV4, followed by the sedan Toyota Camry, then the new entry, Tesla Model Y. And so on, the Top 10 ranking can be found at the end of the article. There is no big difference compared to previous years, but in fact the car market is not having a good time.
Market in crisis
Due to supply constraints, automakers have temporarily halted production since the start of the pandemic, which has led to shaky car sales levels over the past few years.
There have been many changes in sales and inventory. 2022 started with very strong demand, but then things changed towards the middle of the year, due to inflation and the war-related crisis in Ukraine. Demand decreased as inventories increased. Despite that, and compared to Europe, the US data is more encouraging, also due to the low weight of the energy balance that the Old Continent has had to go through due to its relationship with the Russian regime.
In fact, auto industry executives and analysts are cautiously optimistic that the US industry will adjust further this year. Regardless of the fear of recession, rising interest rates and other economic issues, it seems that the share crisis is almost behind us.
Last year the industry was estimated to sell between 13.7 million and 13.9 million vehicles in America. Before this pandemic, the market was more than 4 million units sold and this tells us how much Covid has weighed on purchasing power and the automotive industry as a whole.
