Five of the ten best-selling cars in the world last year came from Toyota. This emerges from data from market watcher Jato. The Toyota RAV4 took first place in the statistics with a good one million units, followed by the Corolla Sedan (992,000 units).
While the RAV4 was particularly successful in North America – the USA and Canada accounted for 43 percent of sales – the Corolla sedan scored particularly well in China. According to Jato, more than half of the sedan sales were placed there.
Tesla is twice in the top ten with Model Y in third place (747,000 units) and Model 3 in tenth place (482,000 units). Ford, Nissan and Honda each had one car in the top ten. All ten best-selling cars worldwide can be found in our photo gallery.

Small car market by two percent
According to Jato, a total of more than 79 million vehicles (including vans) were registered last year. In 2021 it was still a good 80 million. So the decrease is about two percent.
According to Jato analyst Felipe Mundoz, there are two main reasons for this: On the one hand, supply problems and the shortage of semiconductors could lead to poor availability of cars in North America and Europe. On the other hand, sales in the world’s largest market, China, have decreased.
According to the news, global sales of electric vehicles rose 66 percent to nearly 7.4 million units last year. The market share of battery electric vehicles was more than nine percent.
