When BMW took the wraps off the i Vision Dee, the predecessor of the Neue Klasse, in early 2023, all screens and buttons were absent from the car. However we should not fear that the Bavarian brand will go as far as Tesla in removing the buttons, according to an interview with Autovisie and chief designer Adrian van Hooydonk.
Unlike the i Vision Dee, the Neue Klasse models have an infotainment screen and buttons. They use BMW Panoramic Vision (projection just below the windshield).
New guidelines
Van Hooydonk says that the upcoming Euro NCAP directive was not a surprise for BMW.
“I think we are in a good place with Panoramic Vision. Because the information is projected under the window of the new BMW, you don’t have to take your eyes off the road for a long time. We make sure that our infotainment screens are placed high in the car. This means that you don’t have to look down at all. “
Never put turn signals on the steering wheel on a BMW
But the new guidelines aren’t just aimed at screens. The intuitive operation of the features you need while driving will also be evaluated in the future. Buttons are often more user-friendly than touchscreens and BMW has also started using fewer buttons in recent years.
According to Van Hooydonk, fewer bonds are needed with the arrival of more intelligent cars. “But we will never remove all internal buttons. There are many functions for which a normal button is better. To the question: so we will never get turn signal buttons on the steering wheel? The BMW designer answers: “No, absolutely not.”
