Chevrolet has just unveiled changes to the 2023 Silverado, which include a new powertrain for the entry-level model. The brand’s 4.3-liter V6 engine is being superseded by a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, which is expected to provide enhanced performance.
The new engine has been designed to generate 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque, a notable uptick from the 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque provided by the V6. However, the 2.7-liter powerplant still falls short of the 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque of the 5.3-liter V8 that is also available on the Silverado.
In terms of fuel economy, the 2.7-liter is expected to offer superior efficiency, though Chevrolet has yet to provide official figures. The V6 was rated at 18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Chevrolet has also confirmed that the 2.7-liter engine will come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. This unit is capable of providing smoother shifts than the older six-speed automatic transmission, as well as improved acceleration.
The turbocharged engine is being introduced with the entry-level Silverado RST trim and will be offered as an upgrade for other models. Chevrolet is yet to announce pricing for the 2023 Silverado, but the new engine is expected to add a few hundred dollars to the overall cost.
The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado is set to be released later this year and the brand’s new turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine will be available on select models. This powerplant promises to deliver greater performance than the outgoing 4.3-liter V6, as well as improved fuel economy. The 2.7-liter will be complemented by an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard and is expected to incur a slight price premium.
