This small car, which was very popular in the Netherlands, is back

The Mitsubishi Colt is back in the Netherlands. It is based on the Renault Clio and therefore looks similar. You still have a good reason to choose Mitsubishi Colt.

The Dutch love safety and security. We are afraid to take out insurance if a shooting star falls on your head. In this regard, it is better to take the new Mitsubishi Colt than the Renault Clio. Mitsubishi is generous and offers an eight-year guarantee, Renault does not exceed two economic years. The bond can be a powerful tool in the battle to win the favor of the buyer.

But it remains to be seen if the Mitsubishi Colt will be able to match the success of its predecessors. There is no doubt about that early success, in the 1980s almost as many Coltjes were put on the road every year as, for example, Polootjes.

Under the skin there is another important difference and Renault Clio. The entry-level model of the new Mitsubishi Colt is a 1.0L three-cylinder MPI with 67 hp. You won’t find that natural learning expected in the Clio on the Dutch market.

However, we are on our way with the Mitsubishi Colt Hybrid. The powertrain consists of a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, an electric motor, a starter generator, a 1.2 kWh battery and a clutchless automatic transmission. The transmission has two electric gears and four ‘normal’ gears. It makes you dizzy just typing, let alone driving. Because things are not going well. Especially at low speeds, for example in busy city traffic, the various components seem too busy discussing who is doing what.

Sometimes, an engine that you least expect comes into play. During our test, starting is done ‘normally’ with the petrol engine, while driving up the parking garage hill is done electrically. Sometimes the gasoline engine starts suddenly when you drive regularly at 50 km / h and it seems that there is no reason for it.

You get used to it, but it’s not all that refined. On the highway, where the gasoline engine is always running, you don’t bother much with the confusion between all the parts. The theoretical consumption of this compact design is 4.3 l/100 km (1 in 23.3), and if you are not tempted to try a high speed, in practice you should easily fall below 1 can stay 20.

Conclusion of the Mitsubishi Colt test

The Renault Clio is a reliable, well-driving car and therefore an excellent basis for a Japanese variation on a French theme. There are no technical differences, except for the base engine 1.0. Those who are not sure between Clio and Colt can make their choice based on the tastiest coffee, or the seller with the smartest polished shoes. Or on the basis of Mitsubishi’s better warranty conditions, because that is a big advantage compared to Renault.
