The racing version of the Maserati MC20 is finally ready. GT2 will debut later this year.
Although there is already a wide choice of cars from famous brands such as Porsche, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, things are still not going well for the GT2 European Series. This year’s field of participants will not exceed 13 cars, including that of the organizer Stéphane Ratel and one of the owners of the KTM brand, which usually has many cars on the grid with the X-Bow. Perhaps the arrival of this beautiful Maserati MC20 will finally trigger the desired influx of the jaded rich.
GT2 cars
GT2 cars were built for them. With plenty of power, but also good-natured handling, low cornering speed and electronic assistance systems such as ABS and traction control to manage horsepower. Compared to the GT3 cars (and of course the GT LM), the GT2 cars have less power, so that the handling remains under control for the underdogs, but they remain pure race cars.
This is clear when we look at the MC20’s aero package: a remote splitter, an adjustable rear spoiler and a large diffuser. With 325 mm wide slopes on all four corners, you can imagine that the mechanical grip is still great. Like the road car, the GT2 uses double wishbone suspension all round, but without all the rubber and is fully adjustable in terms of suspension, damping, ride height and geometry.
In addition to the carbon fiber chassis, the three-liter V6 from the road car has also been adopted, along with an intake and exhaust system that has been optimized for fast driving at high revs and under high loads. Turbos and dampers have been modified for this purpose. Basically, the engine can produce 621 hp equal to 730 Nm as a road car, but the maximum power will be limited by the coordinator of the GT2 series with a guarantee that guarantees competition with other participants. Weight is also determined in this way.
User friendly Maserati MC20 GT2
A lot of work goes into increasing user friendliness. The road car’s gull-wing doors help a lot with easy entry and exit through the large cage, which is important since driver changes are mandatory in the GT2 Series. Basics, such as ABS settings, traction control and engine mapping, can be changed by flicking buttons on the handlebars.
On the center console, other functions are organized by location and color for quick access during battle. An air conditioning system is also available. The car will be shown for the first time during the final race of the year, at Paul Ricard in October, so customers can participate next year.
Maserati Gran Turismo is better than ever, except for one important part…
