At long last, the moment Tennessee basketball fans have been anxiously awaiting is nearly here. Tip-off time is set for the Volunteers’ Sweet Sixteen matchup with Florida Atlantic, which will be televised live on Thursday night.
The Volunteers (25-5) have been on a roll since the start of the season, boasting an impressive record and a No. 8 ranking in the latest AP Top 25 Poll. With a win against the Owls (19-11), the Vols would advance to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2008.
Tennessee coach Rick Barnes has been stressing the importance of staying focused for the big game.
“We can’t be thinking about what could happen if we win,” Barnes said. “We have to stay in the moment and take it one possession at a time.”
The Volunteers have been relying on the tried-and-true formula of defense and rebounding all season, and they’ll need to continue that trend against a Florida Atlantic squad that is equally adept at both. The Owls are led by senior guard Justin Massey, who is averaging 17.2 points, 3.2 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
In order to come away with a victory, the Vols will need to take care of the ball, limit turnovers and play tough defense. If they can do that, they should be able to come away with the win and advance to the Elite Eight.
The game will tip off at 9:45 p.m. ET on Thursday night and will be televised live on ESPN. It promises to be an exciting matchup between two powerhouse teams, and the Vols have a chance to continue their historic run with a victory.
