Today: Phil Collins is leaving Genesis

The Top 40 has been the leading list in the Netherlands since 1965. In Today’s section we look back at the events in pop music that happened mainly X years ago. On this episode of Today: Phil Collins’ departure from his band Genesis.

Turn on March 28, 1996 leave Phil Collins its guarantee The beginning. Collins was the drummer for 25 years and since the departure of Peter Gabriel also the singer of the band. Although Collins combines his work with Genesis and a successful solo career, he wants to change direction in his musical life. He wants to focus more on jazz projects and writing film music. Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford initially continue with Genesis and Stiltskin’s Ray Wilson on vocals. However, this new design lasts only two years, after which Genesis takes a long break.

Phil Collins, meanwhile, keeps his word. The same year he founded The Phil Collins Big Band. The group mainly plays jazz instrumental versions of Genesis and Phil Collins. After a world tour and album with this band, Collins has found success as the composer of the Disney films Tarzan and Brother Bear. Both films gave Collins a Dutch top 40 hit: respectively You’ll Be In My Heart (#37 in 1999) and Look Through My Eyes (#14 in 2003). He also received an Oscar for best original song.

Led by Phil Collins, Genesis scored ten top 40 hits between 1978 and 1992. Four of these reached the top 10: Mama (No. 7 in 1983), Land Of Confusion (No. 8 in 1986), No Son Of Mine (No. 7 in 1991) and above all, the No. 1. hit I Can’t Dance from 1992. Records such as Jesus He Knows Me, Hold On My Heart and The Invisible Touch have also become classics, although the latter did not top 40 achievements. In 2006, Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford announced that Genesis would reunite and tour again. This will happen again in 2021 with a series of concerts. On March 26, 2022, in the hall of O2 Arena in London his last show as a singer of Genesis.

1970: Melanie & The Edwin Hawkins Singers climb to number one with Lay Down (Candles In The Wind). After Melanie already scored a top 10 hit with Beautiful People in 1969, 1970 will be her year. The American scored top 10 hits: Lay Down, Peace Will Come and Stop I Don’t Want To Hear It Anymore.
1974: John Lennon and Paul McCartney play together in an impromptu jam session. It is the only time since The Beatles broke up that Lennon and McCartney have played together. However, the session is not very productive and is largely dominated by Lennon complaining about the sound.
1995: Jimmy McShane dies at the age of 37 due to AIDS. The Northern Irish singer was known under the stage name Baltimora, for which he scored a number 1 in 1985 with Tarzan Boy. Apart from this hit, Baltimora has not had any success.
2009: Four weeks after Lady Gaga scored her first No. 1 single with Just Dance, the extravagant American singer has already scored her second No. 1 single with Poker Face. This record stays in the top position for no less than eight weeks. Thanks in part to Just Dance and Poker Face, The Fame’s debut album was an unprecedented success.
2015: Destiny’s Child takes the stage again at the Stellar Gospel Music Awards. Later they had a positive reaction, but BeyoncĂ©, Kelly and Michelle do not think of reuniting.
