British classics named in top 10 ‘most wanted’ cars alongside Ford and Mercedes

Classic car enthusiasts have shared their views on the most popular vintage cars on the market, with several British models rated highly.

Drivers were confident in their choice that Aston Martin models were their favourites, with three classics sweeping the new “most wanted” car list.

The Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato is the “ultimate” car to own according to new research, which may be a result of their scarcity.

There were only 19 DB4GT models produced between 1960 and 1963, while only three versions of the MP209 were produced.

One of the MP209 models was auctioned in 2018 for £10 million, complete with a “2VEV” number plate, and also having more power and torque than the Ferrari 250 GTO.

Aston Martin also claimed second and third place with the DBR1 and DP215, with the DBR1 holding the prestigious title of the most expensive British car ever sold at auction for $22.5 million (£17.4 million).

The DP215 record sale was a close second to the only example sold in 2016 for $21.78million (£16.1million).

The first non-Aston Martin in the top five was the Jaguar D-type. It was originally built to win the historic Le Mans race, and despite selling for just a few thousand pounds in the 1960s, the 1955 model sold for over £16 million.

Stewart Barnett, from InsureMy said: “While there are a few ‘newer’ models on the most wanted list – such as the McLaren F1 from the 1990s and 2000s – British drivers agree that ‘oldies are good’.

“The top five are all from the 1950s and 1960s, showing that if people have money to spend, they will go for a classic.

“And while most people can only dream of owning an Aston Martin from the 1960s Le Mans era, there are plenty of drivers out there with their own ‘classic’ cars – anything that’s over 40 years old.”

Surprisingly, some rare brands such as Shelby are included in the list of top 10 “most wanted” brands, while other unexpected marques, such as Alfa Romeo, also appear.

Barnett added: “Cars – especially classic ones – can carry a lot of memories and emotions, and their owners can be very attached, and want to know they are protected, so they can enjoy them for years to come.

“Our classic car insurance helps vintage car drivers find the right policy for ‘their vintage’, whether it’s a £10 million Aston Martin or a Ford Capri – so they can rest easy knowing their car is protected.”
