Mazda CX-80: The seven-seat SUV is coming in 2024

About a five meter long SUV with seven seats

Up to the B pillar, the newcomer is identical to the familiar CX-60. Behind it, the body extends to a length of 4,995 millimeters. An increase in height of 25 centimeters is due to the wheelbase, which is 3,120 millimeters in the new CX-80. The widened rear doors are clearly visible. The SUV from Japan also attracts attention with its large design with a slightly high roof (total length of 1,710 mm) and a high rear window. The belt line does not fit into the triangular window in front of the D-pillar; Mazda uses “graceful durability” to describe the design.

First check with the seat test

The test of the first seat in the new Mazda CX-80 begins at the front. The seating position and cockpit have not changed compared to the CX-60. A rotary push button on the center console allows navigation through the infotainment menu. If you want, you can also control the audio, climate and navigation software through the Amazon Alexa voice assistant.

In the second row, the CX-80 offers more space in all directions. The basic model offers a three-seat bench that can be moved by 12 cm in length. Optionally, there are two individual seats instead of the back seat for the top equipment lines. In the top model Takumi Plus also provides ventilation function in the back, and there is a central console between the seats. Three-zone climate control and sunblinds on the rear doors are always on board.

There are two individual seats on the trunk floor that can be folded down if necessary. According to the manufacturer, they are suitable for people up to 1.70 meters tall. Tall people can find a place here for a short trip.

The trunk volume decreases to 258 liters with the seats up. With the third row folded down, 687 liters are available. Maximum load for five seats with the rear bench folded down is given as 1,971 litres. Trailer load is 2,500 kg, regardless of engine size.

Diesel and plug-in hybrid

All-wheel drive is standard on the Mazda CX-80, which excludes the base 200-horsepower diesel offered in the CX-80. The most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine produces 187 kW / 254 hp. The 48-volt micro-hybrid system provides 12.4 kW (17 hp) as a boost via its starter generator. The diesel accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 219 km/h. According to the WLTP standard, it consumes 5.7 to 5.8 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers.

The alternative in the delivery plan is a plug-in hybrid with a system output of 241 kW / 327 hp. Under the hood is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with 192 hp, as well as a 129 kW (175 hp) electric motor. The 17.8 kWh battery should provide an electric range of 60 km. According to the WLTP standard, the PHEV consumes 1.6 liters of fuel and 23.9 kWh of electricity per 100 km. With a full battery it is said to reach highway speed in 6.8 seconds. The maximum speed is limited to 195 km / h is possible only with electricity. The diesel and plug-in hybrid come with an automatic transmission as standard.

The chassis was modified for use in the Mazda CX-80. It has been designed to provide more comfort and has also been adapted to the higher curb weight of large SUVs.

Equipment and price

The Mazda CX-80 will be available in five equipment lines: Exclusive-Line, Homura, Homura Plus, Takumi and Takumi Plus. Individual rear seats are available for two Homura variants at no extra charge. Rear ventilated armrests including a center console are standard on the Takumi Plus. Exclusive-Line and Takumi arrive with seven seats.

Individual leveling is familiar from other Mazda models. With black leather interiors and dark pattern details on the body, the Homura and Homura Plus emphasize a dynamic look, while the Takumi and Takumi Plus with white nappa leather and detailed detailing aim to embody the precision of Japanese craftsmanship.

The Mazda CX-80 will enter the market in Germany in the second half of 2024. As an Exclusive Line it costs from 55,350 euros in the Exclusive-Line equipment line. By comparison: the CX-60 starts as a plug-in hybrid in the Exclusive Line for 50,850 euros. So the additional fee is 4,500 euros.

New to the range are the Artisan Red colors, which were first introduced on the Mazda6, and the new Melting Copper tone.

No one needs seven seats!A great alternative with lots of space!

As the seven-seater extended version of the CX-60, the Mazda CX-80 is the new top model in the brand’s range, in terms of equipment, the rear seats bring the ultimate luxury of SUV travel. Drives in the form of a six-cylinder diesel and plug-in hybrid are familiar from the platform sibling, as is the cockpit.
