Toyota RAV4 Plug-in – the first step in electricity

Toyota RAV4 Plug-in – the first step in electricity

The Toyota RAV4 is not a small city car. The Japanese company for driving on crowded streets has a Yaris, but compact SUVs, although they usually work as family cars, designed for long trips, nevertheless lead most of their road life in major cities, hard to beat kilometers of queues of traffic. In such cases, plug-in hybrids work well, i.e. those with a large battery under the floor, and in addition to refueling – plug in the hole.

The most interesting thing about this version of Toyota RAV4 is its drive. First of all – his strength. While the standard RAV4 hybrid variants deliver 218 HP (front-wheel drive version) or 222 HP (4×4 variant), the plug-in delivers a total of 306 HP! So it can be said that – at least on paper – we have a sports performance SUV.

Toyota RAV4 Plug-in is not only a symbol of economy. In the case of the Toyota RAV4, it is also the largest total power of the entire car – as much as 306 HP!

However, the source of a large number of horses is not just one engine, but three. The biggest of them is gasoline – it’s a 2.5-liter, 185hp naturally aspirated engine, but next to it there are two electric motors: 182hp on the front axle and 54hp that drives the rear wheels. Everything is linked together with the familiar planetary gear, which Toyota has been using for years in all its hybrids. The advantage of this solution is the combination of individual vehicle sources in order to obtain the lowest fuel consumption possible. In the plug-in hybrid, however, we have an additional option: electric-only driving.

Toyota RAV4 Plug-in has a 185 HP gasoline engine with a displacement of 2.5 liters under the hood. It turns out to be a very economical source of propulsion.

Toyota RAV4 Plug-in – a lot of weight, but good performance

It is only when we use and turn off the electricity stored in the large and heavy battery (this is why this version of the RAV4 weighs almost two tons), we can drive without exhaust emissions. How many kilometers can you travel this way? Toyota claims the range is up to 75km, but I don’t know of anyone who would be able to achieve this range in real road traffic. However, even my 65 km (I also heard about excellent results) is a very good value. In practice, we rarely cover long distances to work or shop.

Of course, Toyota RAV4 Plug-in has a modern multimedia system and a good quality screen. You can follow how the energy flows between the battery and the motors. This is a permanent feature on all Toyota hybrids.

It is important to note that this is not the distance that makes the RAV4 run “on electricity” only around the city. Also residents of small towns or villages will appreciate this model, especially if you can fill the energy from photovoltaic panels. After all, a trip to the supermarket in the nearest town is usually not a greater distance than the above-mentioned range of Toyota SUVs. Interestingly, in electric mode, you can accelerate up to 135 km / h, although of course then you will not get the maximum.

However, to fully appreciate the RAV4’s potential, you have to come to terms with emissions. When the petrol engine comes into play, we can use the aforementioned 306 hp. Then Toyota RAV4, let me remind you – a family SUV, accelerates to 100 km / h in 6 seconds. It is worth adding that it is not much longer than that found with sports hatchbacks. And we do not care that the maximum speed is only 180 km / h, because we will not use it anywhere (maybe except for small and few road sections in Germany).

The Toyota RAV4 Plug-in is quick and unimpressive on the road. For long distances, we will definitely appreciate the good armrests.

Toyota RAV4 – is also economical on the road

Electric driving is cheap if you use your power outlet to fill the 18.1 kWh battery. It takes several hours (even eight) from a 230 V socket, but this is not a problem – it is enough to leave the car overnight. On the way, however, electricity runs out quickly, and on vacation it is not always possible to use a certain source of energy, and if so – it can be expensive, even unprofitable.

The plug-in Toyota RAV4 has a standard A/C control panel. You don't need to use the touch screen to change basic settings. A big advantage.

However, the entire Toyota RAV4 car is also economical. It turns out that the car burns more than 6 l / 100 km on the highway, even when most of the trip is on the highway. This is very little for an SUV that weighs almost two tons and has a motor of more than 300 HP. Dividing the aforementioned trip into parts, we get more different results: around 140 km / h, fuel consumption is 8 l / 100 km, while on normal national roads (and 90 km / h) fuel consumption is not more than 5 .l / 100 km.

The Toyota RAV4 Plug-in drives like a car with a continuously variable transmission from the driver's perspective. In the current version, the Toyota gearbox is arranged in such a way that it does not allow the engine to run at high speed for a long time as it was in the old generation of hybrids from Japan.

Toyota RAV4 – not excitement, but comfort

Despite the high power, the RAV4 is, above all, a comfortable car, designed for a quiet ride, as evidenced by the suspension set appropriately for this character. The interior of the RAV4 in the compact version is no different from other types of cars, but we will not buy this version with poor equipment. As a hybrid of plugins – however, it is from rich versions. This, of course, determines the price – for that “ravka” you have to pay at least PLN 222,000. zlotys.

Toyota RAV4 Plug-in has a luggage compartment volume of 490 liters. It is 90 liters less than the usual hybrid, but in practice it is at least enough.

Is it worth it? This is another question. Indeed, this cost will not be recovered quickly, even if we run every day using cheap (or even free) electricity from photovoltaics. Regularly, the hybrid RAV4 in the basic version can be bought for 153 thousand. PLN, and rich as a plugin and a 4×4 car – for 191 thousand. zlotys. It is still more than 30,000. PLN difference. This is a lot, even at the current price of cosmic gasoline. When buying a “plug-in”, we will instead show our opinion of the environment or simply choose the comfort of traveling in silence, using only electricity.

The Toyota RAV4 Plug-in has a small storage area under the cargo compartment floor, where the battery charging cables can be accommodated.
