Peugeot 406 is a car that has entered the history of cars as comfortable, durable and reliable. It deserves it. A used 400 is a luxury car, even though it is already old.
For decades, Peugeot has been an important player in the middle class. The saga that started with a bang with 405 continues to this day. For many years, the 406 model stood out in terms of durability, which has long been used as a taxi in many European cities, providing high comfort for customers and a durable tool for the driver.
From 1995 to 2004, three versions of the Peugeot 406 were produced. A classic sedan was used, a year later a station wagon and a coupe – designed and produced by the Italian Pininfarina – were added to the price list. The new model was created from scratch, significantly increasing its size compared to its predecessor. The rounded body and thin accents, especially after the 1999 facelift, still have a lot of elegance. What is very important in the old model, 406 was well protected against corrosion, the protection was improved even in modern times. Compared to the rival of the first generation Laguna – which can rust in your eyes – the problem of rust is absent. In some models, only the colorless protective strips and bumper elements are finished.
Inside, instead of the angular forms known from the 405, there are gentle lines, water embossing and higher materials – only the lower part of the dashboard is made of hard plastic. The front seats in each variant are attractive and gentle with their dimensions, guaranteeing comfort for long journeys – in 407 the same soft seats and velor upholstery were left – leather upholstery was offered as an option. In the back – except for the coupe – two adults will find a good place for long trips. The trunk holds an ample 430-526 liters. Most 406s are well equipped, on board we find automatic or manual climate control, on-board computer, cruise control, radio with CD, advanced navigation, ABS and traction control, and a four-speed automatic .

The range of gasoline engines is opened with four cylinders 1.6 8V and 1.8 8V and 16V respectively 88, 90, 110-116 HP. The smaller one is disappointed due to its very low power for a middle class car, while the 1.8 struggles with the engine’s high fuel consumption. Mechanics recommend the 2.0 16V unit – installed in a number of other models of concern. It produces enough power of 132-135 HP. Another important four-cylinder petrol engine is the 2.2 16V with 160 HP. It also uses indirect fuel injection and a timing belt, providing more than adequate performance also with load. Other 2.0 Turbo and 3.0 V6 petrol engines impress with their flexibility, power and performance culture. The price of this is higher fuel consumption and more expensive maintenance. Units produce 147 and 190-207 hp.

Until the 1999 facelift, the 406 diesel models had supercharged diesel engines (except the 1.9 D) with indirect fuel injection, famous for their responsive dynamics, low fuel consumption and great durability. 1.9 D 75 HP, 1.9 TD 90-92 HP and 2.1 TD 109 HP were offered. The latter, however, uses a high-pressure Lucas pump, which is not sealed at high mileage. After the facelift, the era of common rail injection diesels has arrived. The roads were hit by units 2.0 HDI 90-110 HP and 2.2 HDI 133 HP, of course with turbocharger, and in the most powerful versions also with two-mass flywheels. All are equipped with a timing belt – the cost of replacement is about PLN 700. The cost of regeneration of the injector and turbocharger is about PLN 600 and 1800, respectively.

In addition to long-term gasoline and diesel engines, the drive system is also a big advantage of the 406. McPherson struts are used on the front axle, and a multi-link system on the rear axle – the whole is arranged very comfortably, although cornering changing is not yet a big challenge. Especially taxi drivers remember the high durability of the suspension and the good prices of consumer goods.

The Peugeot 406 will undoubtedly be the cheapest option on the market. Today, even for 4-6,000 zlotys, we can get a regular service copy that will be used for years to come without major problems. However, it is worth considering that with age, many devices will simply wear out and require replacement or repair.
