Offered for 2024 sports models – Ioniq 5 electric car as alternative

Small, powerful and very affordable: Hyundai offers two sports models for the masses: the i20 N and the i30 N. But that will end this year.

Cars with a big “N” in the logo are to Hyundai what the GTI and R are to VW: sports models with powerful engines. In the future, however, the compact i20 and compact i30 will have to do without additional horsepower: Hyundai will stop producing small athletes within the first half of 2024. The last cars should be delivered to customers by the end of the year – at least in Europe.

There are no more powerful N models with combustion engines

Background: Hyundai wants to offer a range of products that do not produce domestically by 2035. The EU also insists on this. Despite the long wait until then, the i30 N with up to 280 hp and the i20 N with up to 204 hp are already out;

But there is a replacement: the electric Ioniq 5 is also available in a sports version and produces up to 650 hp. However, with its purchase price of 74,900 euros, it is not as cheap as the i30 N (from 33,650 euros). According to rumours, the Ioniq 6 will also have a sporty look and extra horsepower from 2025.

However, the end of the two versions of the sports cars does not mean that the name “N” will die for the i20 and i30: In the case of the newly minted i20, the “N Line” will be available again from April. There are 17-inch rims, a unique design of the radiator grille and a sports steering wheel with red stitching. In all likelihood, however, it will remain a matter of design techniques rather than performance improvement. Details about the engine and price are still unknown.
