Lights and shadows in Husqvarna-Intact GP / Moto2

The third Grand Prix of the year brought no championship points for the only German-speaking team in the field. But the performance of the young GP in the United States gives hope for better times.

Jürgen Lingg, head of design for Liqui Moly Husqvarna-Intact GP, was already aware early on that the journey to America would be a difficult task. For Moto2 youngster Senna Agius it was a debut on a challenging slope and veteran Darryn Binder has yet to take the oft-quoted cork from the performance bottle.

The reality of the main sports event in Texas was perfectly consistent with the previous situation. While the new player from the European Championship sold with confidence despite the lack of previous experience, the mission in Texas ended on Texas soil for the former MotoGP pilot Binder. The connecting factor – the Husqvarna-Kalex pilots left the US GP without points.

For 18-year-old Brazilian Agius, it was a better weekend than the results suggest. 17th place is a dreadfully middle-class result, but on closer inspection it’s a very respectable achievement. Positives: Agius drove to his limit over three days and remained scoreless on the quiet COTA track. Given that Agius was the sole founder of COTA, the training times were also similar. He missed qualifying by less than 0.2 seconds Starting 22nd on the grid, the youngster put in a good performance. Senna Agius held a large group with Baltus, Moreira, Salac and Gonzalez in the fight for 13th place. In the end, Agius had to settle for 17th place, the time gap to the first winner Sergio Garcia was within 17 seconds. Good performance – no reward, that is the conclusion of the race. Realizing that, boss Jürgen Lingg patted him on the back: “For a delegate on this difficult path, he did very well. We are happy with that.”

On the downside, however, is the introduction of a teammate. He ruined the race weekend, especially in qualifying practice. Due to the crash, the South African was unable to complete the scheduled lap, which automatically pushed the #15 car to last place on the grid. Team boss Lingg: “Starting at the back is the worst thing that can happen to you in Moto2.”

In the style of a young hothead, Binder attacked the field after the start. After two laps, Binder had to pass ten of his Moto2 teammates, including Agius, and on three laps he flew off the track. Intact GP’s second-placed Kalex was able to continue the race, but Darryn Binder was only a plus at the finish, more than a minute behind.

A legitimate idea when forming the Husqvarna Moto2 team was to send a young apprentice, Agius to the track with experienced mentor Binder. At the same time, the master learns from the student.
