Aston Martin has announced that Formula E world champion Stoffel Vandoorne will be the team’s reserve driver for the upcoming Formula 1 season.
Vandoorne, who has competed in F1 for McLaren in the past, became world champion last season in Formula E, representing Mercedes-EQ colors and driving alongside Nyck de Vries, who will also compete in AlphaTauri.
However, the Belgian will remain in Formula E, where he intends to defend his title with DS Penske, while also acting as a reserve driver for Aston Martin in case Fernando Alonso or Lance Stroll are unavailable. Due to the tight schedule, he will share reserve duties with Felipe Drugovich, who became Formula 2 champion this year.
“Stepping into the role of reserve driver in Formula 1 is very exciting and I am delighted to be able to do so with Aston Martin.” Vandoorne said.
“I have watched with great interest how the team has grown and expanded operationally and I know how determined they are to make progress in every area”.
“Joining Fernando, who I already know from my Formula 1 racing career, and Lance, to help them develop and improve next year’s car will be a great job. I’m looking forward to the challenge – and reward – of working with the whole organization at Silverstone. “.
Vandoorne joined Formula 1 in the 2017 season after winning the GP2 Series championship two years earlier. In 2016, he appeared in one race in Bahrain, where he replaced the injured Fernando Alonso. During his appearance at McLaren, he started a total of 41 races, and his best results were a double seventh place at the Singapore GP and the 2017 Malaysia GP.
