Vermont Sexual Assault Recovery Therapist Recognized by USA TODAY

A Vermont-based therapist specializing in aiding sexual assault survivors has been recognized by USA TODAY.

Kathryn E. Leaver, LCMHC, a licensed clinical mental health counselor and sexual assault recovery specialist, has been honored in USA TODAY’s annual “Women Making History” series, which celebrates women making an impact in their communities.

Leaver is the founder of the Kathryn E. Leaver Therapy Agency in South Burlington, Vermont, which she established in 2019. Since then, she has been providing evidence-based trauma therapy to survivors of sexual assault and intimate partner violence in the greater Burlington community.

Leaver’s work is informed by a deep understanding of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, which she has been trained in by the University of Vermont’s Trauma Informed Care Initiative.

“My approach to counseling is one of self-compassion,” Leaver told USA TODAY. “I bring a deep understanding of the impact of trauma and a commitment to helping each person build their own compassionate, self-directed path to healing.”

Leaver’s work has been acknowledged by the Vermont Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, which presented her with the 2020 Outstanding Service Award.

“Kathryn is such a dedicated and talented advocate and therapist,” said Karen Tronsgard-Scott, the coalition’s director. “Her commitment to helping survivors heal and build resilience is inspiring. She is absolutely deserving of this recognition.”

USA TODAY’s “Women Making History” series is designed to recognize women who are making a difference in their communities and beyond.

“Kathryn Leaver is a truly inspiring example of a woman who is making a difference in her community and beyond,” said USA TODAY Managing Editor Nicole Carroll. “We are grateful for her commitment to helping survivors of sexual assault and intimate partner violence.”

In recognition of Leaver’s work, USA TODAY will donate $2,500 to a charity of her choice.
