Travelers aboard a Via Rail train en route to Ottawa endured a two-hour delay due to mechanical malfunction Saturday night.
Commuters on board the train encountered difficulty when the train stalled shortly after departing from Toronto at 8:30 p.m. ET Saturday. The locomotive experienced a technical issue, rendering the train immobile.
Via Rail personnel initially estimated a delay of one hour, though the delay ultimately lasted two hours as technicians assessed the cause of the mechanical problem.
An official statement from Via Rail attributed the delay to a “technical issue,” which caused the train to stop unexpectedly. A spokesperson for the company apologized for the delay, citing “the comfort and safety of our passengers” as the utmost priority.
The spokesperson added that technicians were able to resolve the issue and the train resumed its journey to Ottawa at 10:35 p.m ET.
The incident marked the fourth time in the past year that passengers aboard a Via Rail train were delayed due to a mechanical malfunction.
