Walking the Lance and Nico Hulkenberg both made encouraging progress with their AMR22 during free practice on Friday Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One Team, which has started a new season in Bahrain. The second practice session was important for all teams and drivers and provided a more representative picture of the power relationship heading into Bahrain Grand Prix starting next Sunday.

Although the first practice session is unrelated to the weekend’s racing, it provided an opportunity to gain more insight into the AMR22 ahead of the upcoming Grands Prix. Lance Stroll started the session on a set of hard tires as he attempted to set up the base course in the AMR22. However, his debut came to an end after just five laps when Esteban Ocon’s Alpine lost its side panel and caused a crash on the straight. After a long mandatory break, Stroll set his benchmark time of 1.37.402 on the hard compound before a later run on the soft tire resulted in a significant improvement. A lap time of 1.34.814 with just over 10 minutes remaining in FP1 secured sixth place and capped off a productive morning. Midnight meant well for the team to continue with the race-related set-up and the Canadian was pleased with his progress. He drove the car on the medium tire to create an initial balance and gradually cleaned the car before switching back to the soft tyres. A lockout at Turn 11 on his fastest test meant that Stroll’s best time was 1.33.958, showing that there is still more speed to be gained from the car. In FP1, Lance Stroll set a time of 1.34.814 to take sixth place, in FP2 he improved his time to 1.33.958 (P16).

Lots of excitement and excitement
“I think there’s a lot of excitement and excitement at the airport this weekend as it’s the first race with these new regulations,” Stroll said afterwards. “It’s very difficult to say where everyone is and we won’t know until we get to the end of qualifying tomorrow. For us today it was about continuing to learn how the car works. We had a couple of days of pre-season testing but there is a lot more to learn so that every lap is important I don’t think our times today were representative: I went wide in Turn 11 when I was on soft tires but I’m happy with our overall progress. I’m looking forward to fight for the best starting position on Saturday. I also want to say that Nico did well today despite his late call. It’s not easy to get back into this position of power after a long absence. a modified car.”

After landing in Bahrain around midnight on Thursday evening, Nico Hulkenberg’s day was all about getting comfortable in the AMR22. After his bib number was used and he was inside the AMR22, the German wasted no time adding laps to his driving time, he sat down immediately. But his early progress was interrupted when Ocon’s body panels came loose from his car, just ahead of Hülkenberg’s AMR22. When the session resumed, Hülkenberg was able to complete a total of 23 laps with a best lap time of 1.35.815. The FP2 session gave the German more valuable seat time and he came heartily closer to the level of teammate Lance Stroll. With a total of 28 laps during the session on soft and medium tyres, he set a best of 1,34,061. That put him in a good position to improve during the next qualifying session. His time in FP1 was 1.35.815 (14th) and in FP2 he ran 1.34.061 (17th).

“Enjoy every round”
“I think today was promising for me: it was just getting the car up to speed,” Nico Hulkenberg said afterwards. “I spoke to Sebastian yesterday and he gave me his feedback and understanding, so it’s always good to have that preparation before you jump into the car, however I was surprised by how different it was, especially the condition of the tires and brakes. process. However, I am happy with my good feelings in the car and how I was able to build each run to feel better and better. There is always room for more and we will continue to work to make progress. This weekend is going to be a good challenge I will enjoy every lap in the car.”
