Virtual Showcar powered by the energy of the global League of Legends fan base

Mercedes-Benz combines two things in Project SMNR: a passion for League of Legends Esports and incredible design expertise. The result is a unique online show – created in a joint development process with Riot Games, the developer of the global League of Legends game. Inspired by the dynamic world of League of Legends, Mercedes designers used a creative process to create a car that redefines the boundary between reality and fiction. “For the first time we were able to leave the limits of materiality and physics and let our creativity run wild. Because online space means there is no limit to our creativity,” says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Mercedes-Benz Group AG. “This desire to developing our design and constantly challenging ourselves is evident in the SMNR project. We give our creative space to the unexpected.”

On the occasion of this year’s League of Legends (LoL) World Championship finals in San Francisco, Mercedes-Benz presents its virtual show car, Project SMNR.

Design language and exterior: A unique aesthetic meets smart and powerful

The SMNR project embodies the Mercedes-Benz design philosophy of Physical Cleanliness. The show car combines beauty and wonder in a unique way. Due to the unique environment, the structure has no restrictions related to production and the laws of physics. The use of completely new materials, so-called metamaterials, made possible by this, pushes the boundaries of what is possible. The two-seater has a dynamic appearance with a mid-mounted driver’s cab and increased ground clearance. Wheels in the traditional sense have been replaced by energy zones and are fully integrated into the overall design of the vehicle. Simple energy fields allow axes to be completely erased and their absence brought into focus. In addition, the spokes run inside and accentuate the sculptural axle tunnel. In combination with the extremely short rear area, this reinforces the strong and powerful appearance of the show car. In areas where supporting structures or solid stability are expected, the structure is surprising with bioluminescent energy particles and flowing structures. The car design was inspired by the gaming world in general and LoL esports in particular. It is based on two unique factors: “Energetic Core” and “Zoning Molecules”.

On the occasion of this year’s League of Legends (LoL) World Cup finals on November 5 in San Francisco, Mercedes-Benz presents the details of its online show car for the first time.

“Energetic Core”: A supporting element of the overall structure

As a strong foundation, the “Energetic Core” defines the vehicle’s characteristics and dominates the dynamic design language of Project SMNR. It is a central element of the design and, along with the wheels, which include energy fields, also carries the passenger compartment in the middle.

“Zoning Molecules”: Free-flowing molecules as a vehicle energy source

“Zoning Molecules” is a semi-transparent layer of molecules that constantly changes to the environment. In this way, the “zoning molecules” in the car can give the SMNR Project any possible shape and adapt to the energy base as a central design element at any time. The semi-transparent layer not only allows a view of the interior of the show car, but also creates a completely new look and feel in terms of design language and external effects. The name Split Molecules comes from the game League of Legends. A so-called “zone” is an area controlled by a team – zoning is the equivalent verb and describes the administration of a certain area. Bioluminescent elements are what bring the SMNR Project to life by allowing the water to change in shape and movement. Because each particle of energy represents a player and his avatar, which is called a summoner in League of Legends. So the individual cells are not only a part of the design, but also a source of energy for the car. It is the players, their fans and their needs that drive the beating heart of the SMNR Project, focusing on different areas of the car. During this year’s Worlds, all fans can experience this amazing technique at the Mercedes‑EQ Pavilion inside the Riot Games Fan Village in San Francisco. Project SMNR is presented in an engaging and interactive way through a multi-screen installation that shows the car from multiple perspectives in great detail. Finally, the SMNR Project features the first three-dimensional user interface in virtual space, displaying the environment in real-time hologram. In this sense, Mercedes-Benz presents its design film for Project SMNR: Here.

Mercedes-Benz Project SMNR (Summoner) is powered by the energy of the global fan community: each player and his avatar, called Summoner, is represented by an energy particle in the car.

LoL Esports Worlds 2022 Background

After six weeks of group stages and eliminations, the highlight of the League of Legends Worlds will come on November 5 – the finals at the Chase Center in San Francisco. In addition to the World Cup, the winning team also receives a championship ring designed by Mercedes-Benz with a sustainable diamond in the center. In addition, Mercedes-Benz will be a central part of the Riot Games Fan Village in San Francisco and the so-called Mercedes-EQ House. On an area of 250 square meters, the star-studded brand not only offers a unique insight into the world of Mercedes-Benz, but also presents the Mercedes-EQS SUV as well as a classic show car and a championship ring. This was used as a trophy carrier during the Worlds and transported the Summoner’s Cup from New York to San Francisco via Atlanta. In the car on site, visitors can marvel at the integration of design elements into League of Legends by checking out the MBUX digital information system.
