Mitsubishi urgently needs new electric vehicles and is investing 200 million euros in a new compact electric SUV. Another 600 million euros should come from Nissan. Interesting: The core of this is being developed by the Renault subsidiary Ampere to be the driving force behind the group’s transformation. The new Mitsu should be on “AmpR Medium”. This was confirmed by Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault and Ampere, at an event in Paris. More details about this electric car will be announced in early 2024, a spokesperson for Mitsubishi Motors Europe revealed.

De Meo mentioned that the planned SUV is not only intended for Europe, but for the international market. Mitsubishi’s original lineup for Europe currently only includes the Space Star and Eclipse Cross, while the ASX (based on the Renault Captur) and Colt (based on the Renault Clio) are based on Renault models. The new Outlander will be added as a plug-in hybrid in 2024.

Ampere-built compact SUVs also include the Renault Scenic E-Tech (2024) and the Alpine GT crossover. One can assume that Nisan could also create an electric Qashqai and an offshoot Juke on this basis.

The new compact SUV is likely to be Mitsubishi’s biggest seller. What you need here is a model that can take on the Stellantis, VW and Geely armada (Smart#1, Volvo EX30). Mitsubishi urgently needs new models because, according to Dataforce, sales figures in Europe fell by 28 percent to 29,854 units in the first nine months of 2023. This decline is due to a decrease in demand for the Eclipse Cross plug-in, whose sales decreased by more than 12,000 units compared to the same period last year.
