Volkswagen is under fire for the electric ID series name

Will we still be talking about electric cars when all cars are electric? Or do we just call cars? And what about car brands? Should Volkswagen still give the cars a nameplate if everything is electric? Probably not. But there is a chance that the name will disappear before all cars are electric. Volkswagen is on fire because of the ID series, because the name is already in use.

Identytec is a small company from Germany that manufactures automated machines. About twenty-five people work at Identytec and the group has been using the identity name for fifteen years. For example, the company Identytec has a type of automatic stacking called ID.ADD. So it is not only about ‘ID’, but also the use of dots.

A minor player against Volkswagen?

Volkswagen cannot deny that they have never heard of Identytec, because the brand has even bought things from a small company. Volkswagen only applied for the rights to the Identytec name in 2017. In 2019, Volkswagen first challenged Identytec for having the same product name. So the case has been going on for some time.

For payment Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung says Identytec that they are aware that as a small company they have a tough opponent: ‘We are aware that this is an unfair fight’. Yet small companies persevere. “ID products that are not related to VW and their ID electric cars are currently causing confusion among our potential customers,” they add.

Identytec is receiving support

According to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung The small company is getting a lot of support, including from the state of Lower Saxony. The interesting thing about this is that the state owns about twenty percent of Volkswagen’s shares, as Volkswagen’s headquarters are in Lower Saxony. We dare not say if the ID name will disappear soon. We have a feeling (hah) that Volkswagen may hold off on the legal battle for a little longer…
