yes Volvo C40 is an SUV coupe brother of all-electric Volvo XC40. Although the C40 comes just as an EV, the XC40 is still available as a PHEV and as a clean combustion engine. The XC40 gets a surface lift, which is now integrated with the C40. We looked at Volvo electronics and discovered differences and similarities. By Thomas Majchrzak

The front, Volvo C40 and XC40 EV show a short front, and the grille is painted with body paint in accordance with the cooling required under electric motors. As part of the face lift, the XC40 will have a front end similar to the C40. Full LED lights are now available optionally with new pixel light (matrix LED). Areas that attract other road users are left out of the high light. The C40 side profile, unlike the XC40, shows a sloping roof layer. Electronic versions start with 19-inch rims, and 20-inch rims are available as an option. The rear window and rear window can also command darkness. The C40 and XC40 share the same height and wheel. In the background, however, the C40 is very different: the rear lights have a dot-shaped shape, and the reducers are deliberately set because it was not possible to create a light band in one piece. Overall, the back part is impressive, even impressive, and gives the C40 an individual look. The XC40, on the other hand, has a classic Volvo SUV / estate looking back.

The features of Volvo C40 and XC40 on the one hand are a basic 12.3 ″ digital device with modern design and a 9 ″ vertical infotainment system with Android Automotive (i.e. Google-based) software and Scandinavian internal design. Some C40 and XC40 have very large storage areas, and on the other hand interesting accessories such as those felt inside the doors – in blue or black. The feeling of orange left, that was probably too much. Instead you get black or optional blue. Textile seats are basic, you can freely find a combination of microfiber inside and synthetic leather on the outside (Microtech), all in high quality. You can also order a chair entirely in Microtech or a light colored fabric seat, which, however, has some cotton. Except for the last variant, the Volvo C40 and XC40 will have no animals in the interior. The steering wheel also has a continuous cover of synthetic leather.
Matt’s faces also dominate, such as buttons on the steering wheel or near the bottom cone of the station. It looks better and does not collect too many fingerprints. There are also great options for many storage options, in the middle of the console there is plenty of space for mobile phones & Co.
The infotainment system is simple, fast and efficient, and comes with full Google voice recognition for sat nav and everything else. It can also handle complex applications. And with Google Maps, you have a faster navigation system on board, which is also better at predicting traffic congestion. The system is updated via online updates. After that you do not want to work with any other car navigation system anymore. Battery status is displayed in digital instruments and not in the remaining column. All other manufacturers show the remaining range, and Tesla can choose between the two options. For Volvo, the remaining column is shown only under 20% of battery status. This is not customer friendly. After all, there is now a software update that displays the remaining layer on the big infotainment screen, even showing from / to frequencies.
The comfort of sitting is very good up front, the top position provides a good outline. The Volvo C40 and XC40 already offer a real SUV feel. The XC40 has plenty of bedrooms in the back seats, but the C40 can fit well as an adult if you do not completely stretch your back. That is a compromise that you have to accept for the design of the sporter. The panoramic roof is installed on the C40 and also has no solar cover. On the XC40 you can open the panorama roof and also have a sliding cover on the outside. Knee chamber is the same in every case, you do not have to make any compromises compared to the older brothers of the Volvo SUV. Proof that the small Volvo platform uses space very well. You also sit comfortably and vertically in the back. 413L cargo space (416L on XC40) can also be widely used. The loading floor can also be easily lifted to split the trunk. The only difference in the trunk between the C40 and XC40 lies on the trunk cover.
motors and batteries
Front engine + small battery 67 kWh net
Distance of up to approximately 400 km
Average consumption (winter season): 21 kWh / 100 km
7.4 seconds 0-100km / hour
Maximum 160 km per hour
All-wheel drive (rear and front motor) + large battery 75 kWh net
Distance of up to approximately 400 km
Average consumption (winter season): 24 kWh / 100 km
4.5 seconds 0-100km / hour
Maximum 180km / h
Charging 11 kW AC, 150 kW DC (37 minutes 10-80% SoC)
The small Volvo CMA car architecture is used in the Volvo C40 and XC40. Compact electric SUVs also have sports cheeses. However, comfort is more than just given, so in addition to the good comfort of sitting there is also good comfort of suspension. However, we recommend sticking to 19-inch rims, because 20 inches may look better, but reduce the comfort of rolling to some extent. Because of the slightly more complex design compared to the larger Volvo SUV brothers and the short-wheel drive, the overall driving behavior is much faster, Volvo SUVs more agile. All of them get a mark on a very low center of gravity due to the heavy battery in the middle of the car. In addition, the C40 EV AWD is 0-100 km / h in 4.5 seconds and is another 0.2 seconds faster than the XC40 EV – due to better aerodynamics. Bottom side only: the view through the rear window is worse because of the narrow rear window. Both provide a lot of driving pleasure. The operation is straightforward and accurate. The shift lever is easier to use than on Volvo combustion engines: just pull D or R at once, it is not necessary to take a detour through the neutral gear. Healing is always powerful, there are no different ways to recover. It is therefore designed for single pedal driving, especially using only acceleration pedals.
The main difference between a front-wheel drive and an all-wheel drive is acceleration. The front wheel drive is easy enough to drive through the city, and multiplication is also easy on the highway. The four-wheel drive has a rapid explosion at all levels of performance, and it certainly already runs the performance model.
We recorded a consumption of 19 kWh / 100 km in the summer season. This corresponds to a good 400 km range. In winter, of course, consumption is much higher – despite the heat pump. 21 kWh for front wheel drive and 24 kWh for all-wheel drive. Because the front wheel drive model is better but the battery is smaller, the overall range is the same as that of the all-wheel drive model. This applies to XC40 and C40. During the winter season, the actual layer is more than 300 km.
Commendable: As with all Volvos, the City Security System is already integrated into the basic equipment (collision prevention system with vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and large animals, as well as the brake assistant). Cruise control and Route Aids are also included. Optional is an experimental assistance assistance system, which can drive half-automatically up to a speed of 130 km / h.
Height: 4.43 m
Wheel base: 2.70 m
Counter weight: 2,207 kg
Conclusion: The Volvo C40 and XC40 offer the best of the best in the compact component. Creativity, processing, comfort and ease of driving are high. In addition, Volvo now also focuses on sustainability in the interior. Android automotive infotainment system is ahead of German manufacturer systems. It is only when it comes to recharge and electricity efficiency that Volvo and its Stromer are not at the forefront. Despite this, the C40 and XC40 remain on the short list of most needed compact electric vehicles and their overall version. If the C40 and XC40, that’s a more structural question. With a C40, you lose the head room in the back. Whether the front wheel drive or all-wheel drive is not a matter of range, but of price (difference of 7,500 euros) and performance.
