VW is unveiling the latest flagship of its kind, which will be available only to a limited number of customers
We live in a time where the latest cars are plentiful, so we have to accept that the history of many interesting cars is coming to an end. This lasted only 25 years, as it was in 1998 that the first Polo GTI was born. Today, the last one arrived.
The question arises whether the Skoda Fabia, like many other small cars, will still be sold in a few years. The reason for this is undoubtedly the Euro 7 proposal, which has only proven how true European politicians are. The new issue that they want to address specifically concerns the situation where cars are driven for less than 1% of their life, but will have the effect of making 100% of all new cars more expensive. So it is not surprising that a group has been formed within the EU to reject nonsense that will harm the old continent in every way. But will the states led by Matteo Salvini be able to resist it? No one can answer this question at the moment.
However, it is clear that if the Fabia disappears from the world, the partner Polo will not be found either. Either way, customers will lose the limited edition GTI currently on offer, which is already an exotic car. This hatchback is equipped with a two-liter supercharged engine developing 207 hp and 320 Nm. Already impressive figures that, with a weight of 1307 kg, make this car a real pocket rocket. Even if the word “bag” would be better placed in quotation marks. Today’s Polo is just over four meters long, and 40 centimeters longer than the original Golf.
The Polo has been part of the brand’s range since 1975, but the Germans delayed the introduction of the GTI version until 1998. So this year is the twenty-fifth anniversary, which VW has decided to celebrate as it should. And also because the thirtieth anniversary will not happen again. It is a little sad, however, that the Germans went all the way, especially with the eyes. They did not go under the hood, and therefore the front wheels are driven by the unit described above, unchanged. The new car can reach 60 km/h in 6.5 seconds and its top speed is 210 km/h.
These numbers are certainly solid, but one would expect more for such an event. Finally, we can at least congratulate ourselves that the new car is equipped with a sportier chassis, which has moved closer to the ground by 15 millimeters. The rest are only visual changes that, on the outside, include special painting, the installation of better LED lights or inch alloy wheels 18, black glass roofs and covers. The brake calipers are, for once, red.
Inside, you can count on sports seats covered in tanned leather and decorated with red stitching and the GTI logo on the armrests. The door panels then carry a decorative trim that refers to one of the 2,500 unique examples – with this amount, in terms of Volkswagen sales, few people will get this car. The number 25 appears next on the steering wheel, but that’s where the unique features end. It remains only to mention the usual detailed equipment. However, the price of the car has increased to 35,205 euros (about 834,000 Czech crowns), which is not considered. It is not a small amount, but in a few years we will easily remember that it was possible to buy a small capable car for very little money.

Polo GTI celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the arrival of the sports version unfortunately has a bitter taste, it is a kind of farewell. The car received mainly visual changes, under the hood the Germans did not touch. Photo: Volkswagen
