The BMW X3 is a proven SUV from the propeller company. L’Auto-Journal looks back in its regular analysis… or not!

With the X3, BMW reached a certain audience that could not afford the characteristics of the X5. This is the generation named G01 that we are talking about today. Released in 2017, it was close to the original in terms of style, but technically, BMW did something 100% new! So, what are the common divisions?

Serious immobilizing damage of the BMW X3

In the past, it was the Diesel engines that suffered from breakdowns that were annoying to say the least. Whether it is a 4- or 6-cylinder unit, it is especially starting, especially in winter, that creates a problem.
This technical problem generally comes from the founder. This may be misaligned in some cases. Therefore, its power will be too small to start the engine. In this particular case, it must be replaced. But it can also come from different sensors or probes.
Alternatively, there is also an EGR valve. Most of the time, the light on the X3’s dashboard will flash. Change then is necessary. Then, in the immobilizing breakdown area, there is a steering wheel.
Indeed, power steering can show some signs of weakness. Sometimes replacement or repair of the box that handles this may be enough. Otherwise, a few cases of steering column have been identified on BMW SUVs. In this case, the part is replaced.

Smaller combinations with memory

As is often the case, it is an electronic problem that first appears in terms of small explosions. Depending on the size of the engine, jerks during acceleration can be felt. In most cases, it is the BMW X3s engine management unit that needs reprogramming.
Otherwise, it can come from the same place, but about the gearbox. In most cases, an update may be enough to solve the problem. Fewer problems arose on xDrive models, with four-wheel drive. In particular, there is an oil leak from the all-wheel drive system. Often, these are seen at the level of the G01 generation BMW X3 transmission shaft.
However, this problem was solved before the remodel that took place in 2020. On the recall side, there is a roof spoiler and a forgettable screw that can cause problems. This small failure can cause the loss of this feature. Finally, some 26,000 models of hybrid plug-in models may have a battery problem. In the worst case scenario, it can catch fire while your BMW X3 is charging.

Which X3 is the best to choose?

Even if the many small recalls show some imperfections, we know that BMW has followed the X3 closely. So, it got better over time. After retuning, we can easily say that the German SUV has reached maturity and shows a good level of reliability.
Small and large damage is disappearing more and more. In issue 1155 of the Auto-Journal magazine, our colleague Didier Laurent still mentions the importance of choosing a BMW-backed SUV.
The king’s choice? BMW X3 xDrive 20d, with automatic transmission, from the 2020 model year. This small 4-cylinder diesel offers good performance, measured on drink. Not to mention that it offers better running smoothness, and less hybrid system from tuning.

This would be a wise choice since we find them on the second-hand market from 41,000 euros, with only 40,000 kilometers on the clock. Our expert also expresses his desire to choose the M Sport trim that will please you with its sporty appearance and its level of standard equipment.
