It’s official, Subaru Legacy will be leaving the car market soon

SUVs are taking up a lot of space in the North American car market. This statement, which does not surprise anyone, reminds us that the state of roads in the country has changed slowly in the last decade. The gradual disappearance of cars and new product categories has rapidly changed our shopping habits; they also pushed manufacturers to abandon the model to the detriment of SUVs. This is exactly what it is Subaru is made only to announce the end of Inheritancesedan that traveled the roads of America for 36 years.

A predictable death

The Japanese manufacturer’s first car built in North America will therefore leave Quebec this winter after the 2025 model year. In fact, Subaru has announced that 2025 will be the last year of production of its all-wheel drive sedan.

This ad, on the other hand, is not so surprising, even if it raises some common thoughts. For what? Simply because sales figures for the Legacy have not been available for several years. To better illustrate this, let’s look at the sales of the Legacy in Quebec compared to those of the Outback which, in fact, turns out to be the Legacy Family version.

In 2022, 3,634 Outbacks found buyers, 191 for the Legacy. In 2023, 106 new Heritages were put into circulation compared to 4,055 Foreign. This huge sales gap between the two cars was seen almost everywhere in North America, which explains Subaru’s decision.

Electric and SUVs

Subaru also added, instead of saying, that the Legacy was leaving the area for two reasons: the market shift from cars to SUVs and Subaru’s transition to electric and fully electric vehicles. The automaker also took the opportunity to confirm its goal of producing 8 electric models by 2028. Additionally, Subaru has previously hinted that it wants to launch 3 new electric SUVs by 2026 to add to the lineup with the Solterra, the only car of the manufacturer.

The reasons given by the manufacturer cast doubt on the survival of the Subaru Impreza. The latter, which has the same kind of experience as the Legacy, is less popular than the Crosstrek. 7,695 small SUVs were sold in Quebec in 2023 compared to 877 Impreza, which allows us to confirm that the future of the Subaru small car is uncertain.
