TC Central leads Cadillac in BNC tennis | Sports


CADILLAC — Cadillac showed some success last week against the big dog but couldn’t back it up this time.

The Vikings were up against perennial power Traverse City Central in the annual Up North Invitational last week but the Trojans handed the Vikings an 8-0 setback in Tuesday’s Big North Conference tennis match.

“We were hoping to improve from our matchup with Central last week but we didn’t quite get it,” Cadillac coach Erin Schaefer said.

“We had two very competitive matches during the break.â€

Haylee Groen lost 6-1, 6-1 to no. 1 singles with Sarah Outman losing 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to no. 2.

Averee Heuker lost 6-3, 6-2 to no. 3 while Natalia Torrado lost 6-0, 6-4 at no. 4.

Ellery Schaefer and Aly Baker lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles while Grace Munch and Adri Beydoun lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2.

Clara Brown and Carly Gaylord 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 while Grace Drabik and Myah Goetz lost 6-2, 7-6(1) at No. 4.

Cadillac is in Alpena on Thursday.

PETOSKEY — Cadillac dropped a 2-0 decision to Petoskey in its Big North Conference girls soccer opener.

The Northmen scored in the 52nd and 58th minute.

“I thought we had a strong first half,†Cadillac coach Joy Weitzel said.

“We were working together and playing simple passes. Unfortunately, Onalee Wallis, a key defender, went down with an ankle injury late in the first half.

“The second half was not cohesive as we had to fill the place of our injured teammate.

“I feel their goals came from misunderstandings, but overall we had a great effort in a balanced match.

Lydia Owens made six saves in goal.

Cadillac hosts Alpena on Thursday.

• Petoskey won the JV game 3-2. Carmen Gurden and Alyssa Kovacevich scored for Cadillac while Audrina Runyon made nine saves.
