WRC. Has Hyundai already decided? Suninen’s first tests in Rally1

Team measurements Hyundai Motorsport have taken place in Finland in Jämsä municipality in recent days. Teemu Suninen, which represents Hyundai in WRC 2 this season, had the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of a Rally1 car for the first time. He also participated in three day trips Thierry Neuville.

The Finn is among the third contenders Hyundai i20 N Rally1 in the world championship next year. He shows a segment campaign where he would share a car with Dani Sordo. The Spaniard is implementing a similar plan this year and is said to be interested in a similar role next season. So far he has switched with Oliver Solberg, but HMSG recently thanked him for his cooperation.

“I agree it was good to get into Rally1 and get back on top of the grid,” Suninen told Motorsport.com. – It was good to feel the power, aerodynamics and hybrid car.

– I did not think that I would find myself inside soon, everything came to me. The car was easy to drive and I got used to it quickly, he continued.

– My goal is the whole season in a Rally1 car. I will also be happy to complete just a few meetings. In any case, I am sure that I can be a good help to the team by giving them my experience in fast, well-known meetings – he said.

– If it fails, I rely on the good Rally2 program to participate in the development work of cars – he said.

Starting with Mikko Markkula, Suninen now heads to Rally Japan, the final round of the World Cup, where he will return to the Hyundai i20 N Rally2, certainly inspired by the WRC 2 victory in the previous round of the series, in Catalonia.

An announcement of Hyundai’s full squad for the 2023 season is not expected before FORUM8 Rally Japan.
