After Renault, Nissan moves closer to Mitsubishi

If Nissan is no longer associated with Renault, the same cannot be said about Mitsubishi which remained under the control of its partner despite the dissolution of the alliance. The two Japanese are preparing several joint projects…

If Renault and Nissan are well and done, the Japanese continues to collaborate with his fellow Mitsubishi with whom he is preparing several projects …

The end of the union, but not the partnership

After more than 20 years of cooperation, The Renault-Nissan alliance, started in 1999, officially ended last year. The romance between the two car giants is over. Cultural differences and the scandal of Carlos Ghosn’s affairs (2018) will have completely ended this partnership.
Renault will gradually reduce its stake in Nissan, from 43% to 15%%, to match the Japanese who already own 15% of the French. Manufacturers also ended their regular parts and components purchasing center (RNPO) and stopped information sharing.
From now on, they will no longer be partners, but only involved, from time to time, in certain projects. This is especially the case for Ampere, a subsidiary of Renault dedicated to electric vehiclesThe Horse (heat and hybrid) and The Future are neutral (automotive and parts), which Nissan will share.
Mitsubishi too, which joined the alliance in 2016, will be part of the equation. It already distributes the Renault Captur (Mitsubishi ASX) and Clio (Mitsubishi Colt) under its badge in Europe, and will bring back the 100% electric Renault Scenic E-Tech on its behalf.

Nissan and Mitsubishi, holding hands in pick-ups

But, even if Renault and Nissan balance their joint shares, it will not be the same for Mitsubishi, which will remain under Nissan’s controlits majority shareholder with 34% of the shares.
These two products will continue to move forward hand in hand, and the first projects are emerging … Both are already partners in the field of SUVs, since The Outlander shares its underpinnings with the Nissan Rogue/X-Trailand also in kei cars in Japan (Nissan Sakura/Mitsubishi eK X EV).
They announce today that they want to expand their partnership in the field of utility vehicles, and specifically for developing a new generation of pick-ups together. The subject itself is not new, since The new Nissan Navarawhich was teased on March 26, will be based on the new Mitsubishi L200/Triton.
What is the change today? Nissan and Mitsubishi now want to make electric pickups, destined for North America! Announced for 2027, this tandem, which will compete with Ford F-150 ElectricThe Chevrolet Silverado EV and RAM 1500 REV in particular, could be heavily inspired by the Surf-Out concept, unveiled by Nissan in 2021.

Who knows, maybe Renault will one day take this model on its own account, to make it a new electric Alaskan for Europe?
