How cheap will it be?: New Mitsubishi ASX – a lot of car for a cheap price

For the ASX, Mitsubishi has a practical, compact SUV on offer that is based on the Captur from alliance partner Renault. Now the Japanese are giving people cheap facelifts.

What? Do you know the Mitsubishi ASX? The small SUV can easily be confused with the Renault Captur. It sounds crazy, but it’s true. Because there were plans to completely remove Mitsubishi from the European market. But then the role was behind – Mitsubishi was supposed to remain in Europe. But it urgently needed clean models. So why not use alliance partner Renault?

The best way to see the updated Mitsubishi ASX is from the front. The newly developed vertical elements in the radiator grille are amazing.

Things like the different structure of the dealer network and the different customer groups make the cannibalization effect on the product unlikely at least. Because Mitsubishi has a strong dealer network, especially in rural areas, with strong customer loyalty. The idea would of course still be to differentiate the models more visually with the same platform policy, as many car companies do, but that is a matter for the future.

In any case, Mitsubishi ASX is now waiting for customers, which is refreshed again after more than a year. This is due to the fact that the basic Renault Captur has been on the market since 2019 and could use a little refresh.

The revised headlight design gives the well-mannered Mitsubishi ASX a touch of speed.

The SUV actually still looks quite clean, which can also be seen from the fact that the facelift is quite average. However: The newly designed front end looks impressive. The ASX now looks more powerful thanks to the wide vertical chrome elements, which shine in the area of the radiator grille and are therefore more mature. The rear, which was already attractive, still looks modern and does not need any repairs.

Now better infotainment

The ASX will not lack infotainment in the future, as you can see on the big screen (10.4 inches). Something has happened here with Google’s recently introduced functionality.

However, Mitsubishi has revamped the infotainment. Now there are integrated Google services. In addition, various functions of the car will be able to be controlled via software in the future. It will be interesting to see if the revised voice assistant does what Mitsubishi promises. In any case, it should be powerful enough to run navigation and send text messages. How this works and how it works remains to be determined.

For comparison, you can test how the air is in the second row of the ASX. Just get into the announcer and test whether your knees hit the back of the front seat or not. However, a small SUV with a length of 4.23 meters still has a clever and simple trick that can prevent that: the back seat can be moved by 16 cm. In this way, you can get a lot of space for the rear passengers when there is not much that needs to be transported in the trunk however.

When it comes to trunk volume, the compact SUV is average at just under 1300 liters.

As usual, there is a colorful bouquet of different drives under the hood. The entry level is a 91 hp one-liter three-cylinder with turbocharging (160 Newton meters of torque). The 1.3-liter cylinder promises more power – it’s also charged. It sends either 140 hp with a six-speed manual gearbox or 158 hp with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. In addition, a small electric motor increases the crankshaft to support the direct injection engine with a few extra Newton meters when it is not full of juice.

No more PHEVs

The full mix, which is also available, is technically more difficult. Here the technicians combine a gasoline engine (displacement of 1.6 liters and 94 hp) with two different electric units (49 and about 20 hp). These combine to produce a system output of 143 hp. The automatic transmission integrated into the drive train provides two different gear ratios for the electric motor and four gears for the combustion engine. Fans of plug-in hybrid lines should be in for a treat – this one is left to the ASX. Mitsubishi justifies this with cost.

The price point is exciting: How much is the slightly updated ASX worth? According to the old price list, at least 24,690 euros are required. But Mitsubishi wouldn’t be Mitsubishi if it didn’t have an attractive offer. The ASX is offered for sale on the website with a trade price starting at 19,990 euros. However, this refers to the previous example. The revised Captur is listed at Renault at a price of 22,950 euros. The company will contact you soon if the Mitsubishi ASX remains below this figure.

For an SUV, Mitsubishi creates a complete vehicle at an affordable price. And you’ll find out how he’s doing on ntv.de in due course.
