After years of stalling, the director has finally found his passion project, and the first public audience will soon get to see the film – Megalopolis will premiere in competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, according to Deadline. This will mark the first viewing of the film outside the closed screening, and will give the first look of the project that stars. Adam Driver, Giancarlo Espositio, Nathalie Emmanuel, and more.

The news is not surprising, as the head of Cannes, Thierry Fremauxhe told recently Different,”Megalopolis it’s a project that (Coppola) wanted to achieve for a very long time and he did it independently, in his own way, as an artist. He created the legend of the Cannes Film Festival and it will be an honor to welcome him back, as a filmmaker who is coming to present his new film.” really that first time Megalopolis It remains to be seen, as Coppola previewed the film to distributors in March.

Plot details remain thin, but according to a memo from Coppola, “The fate of Rome haunts a modern world that cannot solve its social problems in this epic tale of political ambition, genius, and conflicted love.” The film stars Driver as Caesar, an architect who sets out to rebuild an alternate version of New York City following a tragic accident. Caesar will fight the mayor, Frank (Esposito), while Emmanuel portrays the mayor’s daughter, Julia. This is not the first time for Coppola in Cannes

This won’t mark Coppola’s first appearance at Cannes – he brought his 1979 war film. Apocalypse Now for the concert. At that time, Apocalypse Now, same as megalopolis, had few details released about its plot (even now, it’s just the first image Megalopolis revealed). However, Apocalypse Now won Cannes’ prestigious Palme d’Or – perhaps a similar fate awaits Megalopolis.

There’s also another question looming for Coppola: getting the film into theaters. Despite financing the film with more than $100 million of his own money, Coppola it has not yet found a distributor Megalopolis, though according to Deadline, he is emphasize the IMAX program for the film. This could change soon, though, especially given that the film has already been shown to buyers once and will be screened again at Cannes. Coppola directed Megalopolis from a subscription script and is producing the film through his own production company, American Zoetrope, along with Michael Bederman.

Coppola is targeting a 2024 release for Megalopolis. Stay tuned to Collider for more information.
