GM Recalls BrightDrop Zevo Electric Transmission Vans Over Front Drive Unit That Could Leak

Manufactured at the CAMI Automotive Company in Canada, the BrightDrop Zevo has been recalled for safety. According to documents filed by General Motors with a federal watchdog, the front drive unit in some 600 series pickup trucks can leak oil.

The Detroit automaker was notified of the situation by an employee through Speak Up For Safety, a program that encourages the company’s employees to report safety-related issues. SUFS was launched at a time when GM’s biggest headache was a faulty ignition switch that caused 124 deaths.

According to the report attached below, the front drive unit of the 2022 model year BrightDrop Zevo 600 caught fire on December 7 last year. Not even a week later, on December 13, General Motors received another SUFS report on a front-wheel unit fire. For one reason or another, Detroit’s Big Three automakers did not open an investigation into the fire until December 22.

Investigations revealed that production of operating units during a specific build window may contain unspecified hardware. When this happens, the drive pin can cut its way through the outside of the front drive case, causing an oil leak. The elements of oil and fire do not mix, hence the lower fire reported.

Finally, the Part Safety Decision Authority decided to recall vehicles that could be affected due to the high risk of underground fires. Known as the X80, the front-wheel drive unit has part number 24041528 in the American automaker’s parts system. GM did not say whether this vehicle unit is manufactured by General Motors or a supplier.

About 66 vehicles were connected to the suspected drive units, which are electric vans of the year 2022 connected between November 2021 and May 2022. All are owned by the fleet customer, and – get this – all will be replaced. Cars, that is, are not driving units. Replacement vehicles will be fitted with front drive units manufactured outside the suspect window.

Dealers have already been notified of this defect, while the fleet customer will be notified on February 15. The X80 operating unit is also available in the GMC Hummer. EV pickup truck and sport utility vehicle, with General Motors promising up to 255 kilowatt or 342 horsepower engines.

Codenamed BV1, which stands for battery-electric van one, BrightDrop’s first vehicle was unveiled in January 2021 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. At the time of reporting, the Detroit automaker lists two versions of the Zevo.

The 400 means 153 inches of wheelbase and 239 inches in overall length, while the 600 hits 183 and 290 inches. Cargo volume clearly favors the 600 (615 cubic feet vs. 412), but in terms of cargo, the 400 is better. (1,800 vs. 1,460 pounds). Both are good for 250 miles (over 400 km) on a full charge of 165-kWh battery pack.
