Subaru Crosstrek (2024): New name, improved technology

Subaru is giving its off-road company a major update. This also coincides with a name change: instead of XV, the new version is now called Crosstrek. The regular five-door Impreza, from which the Crosstrek is offered, also benefits from a facelift.

Subaru on snow: all-wheel drive is part of the brand’s DNA. This is also the case with the new Crosstrek.

Subaru XV, a model with a coupe appearance, is now called Crosstrek, as it was in the USA, the brand’s most important market. The 4.50 meter long compact crossover has been one of Subaru’s most popular models out there for years. The technical improvements and modern visual measures now given to the old XV provided the perfect opportunity to change the name. Not only does it receive an update, but the professional Impreza is largely identical.

Special software for off-road driving

On the outside, the Crosstrek stands out with its more attractive front and rear fascias. A large radiator grille, LED headlights and flared wheel arches are among the features of the new model. The Impreza’s sister model is less muscular, being five centimeters flat and having less ground clearance. The Crosstrek, whose body maintains a distance of 22 centimeters from the ground, can therefore handle the terrain better. Sometimes you can go over hill and dale or through deep snow. The special off-road driving program (X-Mode) is automatically activated below 40 km/h and now improves traction even when reversing.

This is new: The 11.6-inch touchscreen serves as the main infotainment portal.

Up to five occupants sit comfortably in seats that now support the body better than before and provide long leg rest. The “long-legged” Crosstrek is also recommended as a relaxed and comfortable commuter on long trips thanks to its comfortable chassis. The steering doesn’t respond particularly directly, but this is accompanied by a quiet driving style and pleasant handling.

New cockpit layout

Inside, the Crosstrek is open in terms of fittings and operation. The large 11.6-inch monitor on the board is new, previously there were two displays. The touchscreen also houses the climate control panels. As with the Impreza, 315 to 1297 liters fit in the cargo area – a standard size in the compact class. The maximum payload is 397 kg. The Crosstrek can carry up to 1,250 kg.

The e-Boxer drive is installed in both models, which is a two-liter hybrid of this special model reaching 100 kW/136 hp. The Boxer has 14 hp less power than before, but benefits from a small electric motor integrated into a continuously variable CVT transmission, which produces a torque of 12.3 kW and 66 Newton and pushes the Subaru duo when starting and stopping.

Crosstrek, which weighs about 1,700 kg, accelerates from a standstill to 100 km / h in 10.8 seconds. After a long run, it reaches a maximum speed of 198 km / h, but that should be enough for most customers. . According to WLTP, consumption is given as 7.7 liters per 100 km, corresponding to 174 g/km CO2 emissions. This largely matched the values we determined when driving at leisurely speeds; It was mainly on the Bavarian country roads.

Another special feature: In addition to all-wheel drive as a key feature, Subaru relies on boxer engines.

When asked why Subaru didn’t show more confidence in its design, the Japanese manufacturer said that it was going this way, as the Crosstrek’s confident appearance shows, but that it wanted to remain conservative.

Crosstrek starts at a price starting at 34,790 euros. Subaru charges from 34,990 euros for the Impreza, which is also an all-wheel drive vehicle.
