Subaru Forester e-Boxer, what we like and don’t like | Our testimony

The fifth generation of the Japanese SUV Subaru Forester it marked the coming of the new e-Boxer hybrid system, which combines the power of Subaru’s proven boxer engine with a small electric motor to help in special situations; fate is very rich thanks to4DVENTURE settingat full discretion, and space on board Subaru Forester is certainly not lacking – let’s find out how the days of driving this SUV went.

What convinced us

Let’s start by talking about design, like always trying not to make aesthetic decisions as the end can be very personal and vary greatly from person to person; However, we can start by showing the specifications, and the Subaru Forester e-Boxer that is about it. 463 cm in length, with a width of 173 cm and a top step of the same measurement. L’ground clearance is 22 cmdetails that, when combined with the four-wheel drive available on all versions, make for surprisingly good off-road performance. Despite the important dimensions, Subaru Forester will be able to be very good even in the citywhere maneuverability can be poor, also thanks to camera – back and side – and ai sensors which are activated during parking.

In the tested version and configuration of 4DVENTURE we denote a more stable structurea clear reference to off-road use: the car is decorated with orange details inside and out, with wheel arches designed with a more square line and with a black front grille, which hides the e-Boxer engine behind it, of first strong. -hybrid installed on Forester.

The motor is another detail that has made us satisfied, at least as long as one is satisfied with a car with stability, with variable speed and reduced fuel consumption as goals: in this case a hybrid engine, made up of 150 horsepower 2-liter boxer of power and electric motor from Horse power 16.7 Integrated in the transmission, it offers its best ability even to allow different parts to travel in 100% electric mode, despite the electric motor being very small, as in the case of the battery, which it only has. 0.66 kWh.

It is rare for a mild hybrid to allow sensitive movement in electric mode only, and in this we must recognize the characteristic of the Subaru Forester e-Boxer: great skill is required on the accelerator pedal, otherwise the internal combustion engine will start, but it is possible to shift up to 40 km / h starting from a standstill using only the electric motor, while in other situations at high speed – for example when going downhill – you will see the internal combustion engine is turned off (the rev limiter goes to zero) and the car will continue. travel while maintaining speed practically unchanged thanks to the electric motor alone and the force of gravity.

Another very impressive aspect of the Subaru Forester e-Boxer is of course the level of equipment. ADAS and safety systems: Forester 2022 has all the latest systems such as Adaptive Cruise Control and routing system, systems supported by some type of very simple header display based on colored lights reflecting the lower part of the windshield, for communication with the driver, but it can also boast more advanced systems such as Seeing eyesa system that keeps an eye on the state of health and attention of the driver, for example by ensuring that the latter does not close his eyes while driving.

We wanted to test this system, especially when using it with cruise control and lane keeping: by pretending to be sleepy and taking your hands off the steering wheel, the car will soon start beeping until the driver returns. vehicle control.

Sitting in the driver’s seat you will definitely appreciate good quality of materials which the dashboard and passenger compartment were generally covered, and we really appreciated it wealth of physical keys literally scattered everywhere; It’s not easy to learn where all the buttons are at once, but it’s still better than hiding everything behind the touchscreen. Information such as i seats and heated steering wheeltogether with dual-zone automatic climate control, make life inside the Subaru Forester e-Boxer comfortable and relaxing. The dimensions of the powered trunk are important, and the side hooks are especially appreciated for being able to keep small items locked in place.

What did not convince us

As is often the case with cars of this type, exchange it’s one of the weakest points: the CVT only works well if you stick to its various uses, without suddenly accelerating. When you try to accelerate faster, expecting a slightly quicker response from the automatic gearbox, instead you get an acceleration that goes fast-back without changing gears until you let off the accelerator a few millimetres.

The Subaru Forester e-Boxer is equipped 2 shows placed centrally on the dashboard: the largest and most central one is providedinfotainmentwhile the second is about providing information on hybrid system operation during March. Unfortunately the old one doesn’t look too modern, with graphics similar to those of the first smartphones, and despite pairing the phone has had Difficulty activating Android Auto functions (in the wireless version, when it works). The second one, in our opinion, is small and too far from the driver’s eyes and can be a source of discomfort, especially if you are interested in driving efficiently.

Subaru Forester, give it a try

Driving efficiency will definitely be an important feature if you decide to buy a Forester e-Boxer, because uses it’s anything but exciting: even with careful driving, trying to make full use of the connected hybrid system, we never improved the fuel consumption more than 12 km and a liter of petrol.

How to drive a car

Subaru Forester e-Boxer ads positive feelings while driving: holding the road is stable even at high speed, despite the large ground clearance. It may be an SUV with off-road ambitions, but on pavement at highway speeds its qualities don’t suffer at all. As expected, the response of the e-Boxer engine with the automatic CVT gearbox is not pleasant, it changes smoothly for quiet use but forgets any desire for sports, despite the inscription “Sport” on the instrument panel.

Battery available from only 0.66 kWh it uploads and downloads very fastbut when it is ready to generate energy, the difference is important: as soon as it returns to zero, however, the gasoline engine activates a current generator that takes care of charging it for a short time, to be able to use fluidity. of electric motor again, details that are very easy in the city at low speed.

Is it worth it?

Hard to say, the Forester e-Boxer has left us with a mix of emotions, with ups and downs. The car is certainly spacious, carefully designed to provide the highest level in terms of space and comfort; In short, if you have a large family or just like to involve friends for a long, round trip, this solution is valid. The propulsion system is also excellent which, if used carefully, can provide the right satisfaction even if the use does not seem convincing (perhaps due to the mass of the car itself, 1,600 kg, and the aerodynamics which are not at the highest level). Finally, the onboard equipment and especially the ADAS mode are good, even if the display definition is not the best.

Four settings are available, PREMIUM (recommended for 46,450 euros), 4ADVENTURE tested for this copy (offered for 44,750 euros), STYLE (recommended for 41,950 euros), Free (offered for 39,950 euros); all versions offer permanent all-wheel drive and the mild hybrid engine we told you about. The main differences concern the hardware on board and some external components. Is it worth it? On the market it is not easy to find a solution capable of dealing with uneven terrain while maintaining a good level of driving comfort on the road at the same time. Subaru Forester, in our opinion, fits into a segment almost of its own and there is no real measure.
