Subaru Impreza (2024): First test

Subaru Impreza (2024): First test

Subaru Impreza has existed in Germany for more than 30 years. The sixth generation of the Japanese compact will enter the market in 2024. Visually you cannot see any differences. How can an invisible compact convince on the first test drive?

The beginning could not be more difficult: Subaru is launching the sixth generation of its Impreza. While there is a good selection of manufacturers, car variants and drivers in all price ranges. And although the Impreza has been available in Europe since 1993, Subaru has a long history in rallying, is the world’s largest all-wheel drive car manufacturer and is one of the few manufacturers still using boxer engines, the new Impreza has to hold its own. in many efforts in the highly competitive market the Compact class appears. On January 27, 2024, the sixth generation will be available from dealers in Germany starting at 34,990 euros. At the same time as his SUV brother Crosstrek, which replaces the XV and also has to fight for its place in the compact class. The first test drive should show how impressive the Impreza wants to be.

At the time of testing, the new Subaru Impreza (2024) is available in nine exterior colors. Three new colors have been added (at an additional cost): Sun Blaze Pearl, Oasis Blue and Sapphire Blue Pearl. There is not much choice in the car range, as there is only a two-liter boxer engine with electric assistance and a total of 136 hp (110 kW) to choose from. With an integrated electric motor of 12.3 kW (17 hp), the Impreza can even drive fully electric – but only two kilometers. But that is not his goal either. A small electric car is primarily intended to reduce consumption and reduce emissions. Anyone wanting an electric car from Subaru will soon have even more options with the addition of the Soltera, which is already available. The manufacturer wants to release eight electric models by 2028, four of which will be SUVs. Also interesting: Tips for our products on Amazon

New Subaru Impreza (2024) is not for fast sports

There are no surprises when driving the new Subaru Impreza (2024). The 4.5 m tall Japanese is a faithful partner, intuitively understood and calm in everything. The same applies to performance and utility. You can’t win a drag race with an Impreza. A 1.6-ton truck needs 10.6 seconds to reach 100 km/h. We even managed to beat the manufacturer’s combined consumption of 7.3 liters per 100 kilometers and 6.6 liters during the car test on highways and country roads. One reason for the economical use is the CVT transmission, which is supposed to keep the engine always in the best type of speed. However, this sometimes comes at the expense of driving pleasure, because the system works well, but as a driver you first register the speed, then the noise and only then the performance. However, the Impreza impresses with its precise handling and the well-known benefits of a boxer engine: a low center of gravity and good weight distribution ensure high driving stability and low vibration.

The interior of the new Subaru Impreza (2024) is also stable. At the second level of equipment, Platinum, Japanese comes with, among other things, leather seats with electric seat adjustment, a navigation system and an electric glass sliding roof. Even basic Trend devices already have a lot on board. This includes heated front seats, a reversing camera, a multifunction steering wheel and an extended Eye system, which is being installed on the Impreza for the first time. Three camera lenses monitor traffic, combine various driving aids with each other and better protect the person behind the wheel through acoustic and visual signals.

The 11.6-inch touchscreen in the center console is easy to understand; more important features such as temperature or volume can still be controlled instantly with a few buttons. Technical assistants are there, but without being annoying and constantly interfering or shouting. The volume control did not work properly during the test run. The new Subaru Impreza (2024) did not want to enter the destination or call anyone. What is worth highlighting, however, is the space in the back seat. Thanks to the wheelbase of 2.67 m, even tall people are not left behind. There is also enough space in the trunk. Suits, bags, jackets and things can easily fit here. From 315 l, space can be created up to 1314 l by folding the rear seats. What is surprising, however, is that the Subaru does not have a parking beeper. Anyone entering tight parking garages will not receive any warning signals from the vehicle. We know things differently in the compact class.

Our conclusion

Subaru remains true to its line and, with the sixth generation Impreza, brings a solid car with well-known core values to the market. Experience, driving technology and its difference should convince when it comes to compacts. All-wheel drive is still rare in this segment. It remains to be seen whether the Impreza can hold its own with just one engine variant.
